Writing Lesson Recommendations By An English Teacher!

Writing

As an English teacher, I have been giving tips about managing English lessons based on skills which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. If you want to learn my ideas about reading lessons, you are welcome to check my posts that I posted on Monday and Tuesday. Today, I would like to talk about another important skill which is reading. Students are usually afraid of doing writing exercises as it is more difficult than reading or listening.

However, some experienced teachers can find some ways to make the lesson more interesting and effective for students. First of all, an experienced teacher must be well-prepared for the lesson, stating lesson objectives, words, grammar and some special phrases that can be used in writing exercise. If you are not able to introduce the activity to your students clearly, you may not a get a point at the end of the lesson.

Warm up

It is always a good idea to start with a warm up in your all lesson activities. If just just give some blank papers and ask your students to write something on it, they won't be able to produce anything at all. After teacher explain the topic of the day, students might discuss in groups what to write about the topic and brainstorm some ideas, I usually let my students be alone in the class and tell them to discuss in English.

By doing this, we combine skills of English together and create an environment where they can feel the language. After giving them to discuss about the topic for maybe 5 minutes, we can ask for their suggestions and write them on the board so that everybody can see them. When our target subject is ready, teacher and students can try to find some phrases and words that they can use in their writing. It is a good idea to list them on the board.

Writing Plan

After writing all the things that they may need in their writing work, it is a good idea to show them how to use some words in sentences. When you write a new word on the board without explaining how to use it, they are not able to use it. We should definitely keep it in mind that they are learners. When they see something new, they need to create something with that so that they can use later themselves.

To start a good writing, it is a good idea to show a sample of the work. If they need to write an opinion essay, they need to see some other works so that they can get idea. It is not a good idea to start writing without thinking at all. They should know that writing must be well planned, so they should know what they need to focus on the parts of writing. As teachers, we must acknowledge them about the structure of the writing.

Draft

Writing a draft is important. While they are writing their products, they might make some mistakes which is totally normal. I usually ask my students to work in pair. When they are done with their drafts, they swap their papers and try to find their mistakes, by discussing about their works. It is a good way of learning by others' mistakes. Students can be also their teachers in this point by giving and getting advice.

When they are working on their works together, we can also assist to help them find their mistakes. When they are done with their draft, they can write their works in final form and read them loudly so that other students can learn something from them. Students must respect each other while each of students is reading their work. They should know that they can learn something from other students which happens with interaction.

Progress

Writing can be improved by practicing a lot. Student improve themselves by making more and more mistakes. After a rough process, they finally see positive results in their learning process. In this post, they need some experienced teachers who know how to lead them in this difficult road.
