Religion

Class management is not an easy talk. As a teacher, we are the ones who have to organize all students and state some rules to create a peaceful atmosphere for everybody. There are some things that should never be talked in my class. These are my opinions, so I can understand you well if you don't agree wit them. First of all, religion is a bit sensitive topic.

It doesn't matter if your students are kids, teenagers or adults. Talking about religion might create some uneasiness in classroom and students might feel different about their classmates. I never let my students talk about this touchy topic. We never know and care who believes in what. People might have some different beliefs and it is nobody's business in life. We need to respect.

Politics

Here we go. This is another sensitive topic which might create tension between students easily. Classroom is not the best place to talk about our political decisions. It is not important what teachers or students think about politics. All we care in classroom is learning and teaching. This touchy topic might cause your students to lose trust in you which is not good at all.

If your students are persistent in learning your ideas, you might have some meetings outside the class. I am usually like friends with most of them. We usually go out for a coffee after class and talk about everything that my students wonder. However, they should know that classroom and life outside class are completely separate and they shouldn't be mixed into each other.

Parents' jobs and their background

If you are working with kids, this topic is much more important ever. I remember my first days in school. Some of our teacher used to ask about my parents' jobs. Some of my friends were coming from wealthy families and their parents were like doctors, engineers which means that they have better opportunities than other students. It is not good to ask students about these things.

Children might come from different backgrounds. If you live in a country where there are lots of different ethnics, it is totally normal to see people from different ethnics learning things together. If you questions about their parents's jobs or background, it might lead to discrimination among students and they might feel unconfident during their education life.

Sex

Another key topic that is not allowed in my classes is sexual preferences. We all are fine with sex and it is totally normal for all people. However, some students might have different sexual preferences which are not accepted in some societies. If you dig into a discussion about this topic, they might feel angry at you because of it and lose their motivation because of it.

After all, classroom is the place where we are supposed to teach and students are supposed to learn. If you start a discussion which is sensitive or taboo in society, you might negative comments and reactions from your students which might destroy all nice relations between students and you. If this ever happens, it might be impossible to go back to old days when everything is under control.

Respecting different points of view is part of the human being, everyone thinks differently. Your classes without these topics or rather, by eliminating this series of conversations among students, helps avoid conflicts, however, it is always good to inform them a little.

Setting ground rules is definitely important and it will enable students to understand the required behaviours during discussion.

Agree, especially with religion and politics. 2 subjects that might put people with the mood to discuss or even fight.

Regarding sex, I do believe it should be discussed only for educational purposes.
