Creativity
I don't know how often I form this sentence in my classes. It is sad to see that some of my student are lazy in reading something and they don't have habit of reading something, in Turkish which is our mother language or English the one that they are supposed to learn. They often ask me why I am so insistent in encouraging them to read something in English so much. There are lots of reasons for it.
Unfortunately, many people are just lost in creativity. They can't form anything in production part when you want to talk to them. I see my students having problems in creating something when they are asked to write a dialogue or write what they did last summer as an example. Reading is surely the best way of improving their creativity. If you don't read, it is not possible to widen your imagination which creates creativity.
What is that word?
When I give my students task, they often keep me busy with this question. After telling them the meaning of the word they want to use in their task, another question comes up following the first one. The question is how I can do it! At this point, I start telling them why they should read something in English again. As we all know, vocabulary is really crucial in learning a new language. It should be gained as much as possible.
When we are reading a text, we are exposed to all forms of them. If your students are good at forms of sentences, they will surely learn new words and won't ever need to check dictionary as much as they used to. Reading will result in getting better at vocabulary and it will also enrich their grammar which is strongly related to other parts of a language.
Fluency
One of the common problems I observe in my student is that they can't be fluent while doing something in English. Fluency can't be observed in their actions. It is not only about speaking. Writing and listening require fluency as well. The main problem in fluency is the lack of repetition and vocabulary knowledge. If you want to be fluent at an activity, you must be exposed to more texts.
When our brain is full of sentences which occurs with lots of reading, we get better at expressing ourselves clearly and fluently. There are many students who come to English course with great knowledge of the language. When I ask them how they have managed to do it, they usually tell me it has happened through watching and reading a lot. Reading leads us to become confident and fluent thanks to repetitions of words.
Keep your brain active!
Our brain needs to be stimulated all the time. If we want to memorize things and keep them in our memory for a long time, reading is essential. I usually advise my students to read the texts loudly even when they are alone at home. As our brain is stimulated constantly while reading, we get better at visualizing them and this helps us not to remember the word and structures we see in reading.
Reading helps us to be better writers. A good reader in a new language always takes notes and thinks how to be good as music as the writer of the book. As we keep reading and taking notes during the activity, it surely results in being a better writer and writing is a crucial part of learning a language.
Education
As summer is already in our cities, you may encourage your students more to get the habit of reading. I never stop telling them to get a book and widen their imagination in learning English language. It can be the way of spending summer time!
