Vocabulary

As we all know, learning new words is one of the hardest thing for a student. Even though summer time has come and many student are on break, I am still teaching since we have got summer language courses. When I have skill lessons with them, I prefer to study vocabulary with them to expand their knowledge. However, it is not as easy as it is assumed.

All things in English should be taught through some activities. If your students don't know how to use a word in a sentence, they won't understand anything even if you say its meaning. Therefore, some good activities and contents where they can see how those words are used will help them a lot and make them feel confident in learning a new language. Today, I would like to show you an example lesson of teaching vocabulary.

A good content!

In order to conduct a lesson efficiently, it is important to choose an interesting content. As our aim is to teach vocabulary, it is better to do it through a reading. I usually prefer to find some texts or use course books, but it is always easy to write a text easily. All lessons in teaching a language should start with a good warm-up to get students' attention. You can start up a conversation by asking your students what they did on their last holiday and try to get some answers.

My interesting trip!

I was in Venice last weekend. The sea was amazing and I met lots of incredible people. When we went to restaurant, waiter told us that food is always delicious . After eating, I realized that it was tasty and waiter was right. When got back to hotel, there was a surprise for us. Hotel staff served us some sushi, but it was awful. I can still remember how terrible it was. At the end of our holiday, we met a couple. The man was really old, but his wife was quite young, it was shocking.Anyway my holiday had some good and bad sides, so I guess I would like to go there again one day.

Match the words!

After reading the text, you may ask your students to find synonyms and antonyms of the world in text. This text is a bit short since this is an educational post. However, you can find lots of materials for your lessons or write your own texts the way you wan to do it. When you ask your students to find synonyms or antonyms, you will urge them to think more about the words. It is possible to prepare an exercise like the following one to make this easier for them.

Could you write the synonyms or antonyms of some words which are in the text above? = refers to synonym and x refers to antonym! You may also ask your students to give an example with each word so that they can also make their own sentences by using the given words.

amazing =
tasty =
tasty x
old x

Practice

Like in all activities, it is not enough to learn how things are used in a new language. If you don't create the chances of using which is taught to your students, they will never learn them effectively. I give some tasks to my students and ask them to write a text like I have written above. The rule is to use the words that they have learned in the lesson.

When they are done with writing, I ask them to work in pairs and find their mistakes. As the words are listed, I prefer to ask them to tell me an example with each word so that they can hear more example with the words. Learning happens through some basic steps. Students should be exposed to a word in text, then they should see how it is used by the guidance of a teacher and at the end they should produce something!
