Science fun!!! - Apple Science Activity

My children absolutely love apples, we just can't keep up with the apple flow in our house. So I thought it fitting to find something else we can do with rather than eating. So hopefully, we will have some fun.

Today's science experiment focused on the effect that different liquids have apples.

You will need the following:

1. 5 small containers
2. Apples
3. Lemon juice
4. Vinegar
5. Water
6. Tonic water
7. Soda

Instructions

1. Put out 5 small containers out, make sure that there are a few apple pieces in each one.
2. Put a label with each container.
3. Pour the liquid, that is written on the label, into the container.
4. Make sure to put a control cup separate where there is no liquid in.
5. Wait.
6. Leave the apples for a couple of hours and return to see what has happened.

Ask the following questions:

1. Which apples have oxidized?
2. Which apples had brown spots?
3. When does oxidizing happen?
4. What happened to the apples that were put into the lemon juice?

Interesting information to have been learned from this activity:

1. Lemon juice contains ascorbic acid. This prevents the apple from oxidizing.
2. Tonic water contains citric acid. This also prevents the apple from oxidizing.

Even though we have a lot of things in life that is black and white, we have to teach our children that experimenting means that there are a variety of options and possibilities that can result in different answers, different endings.

Encourage your children to think outside the box and allow them to try and test, within a safe environment.
