Human Anatomy #3 - Respiratory System
Human Anatomy #3 - Respiratory System
In our previous two parts, we discussed the Cardiovascular System and the Support System.
Today we are going to discuss the Respiratory System
What is the respiratory system?
Our Respiratory System consist of the following
*Nose and mouth
*Pharynx
*Trachea
*Lungs
*Bronchi
*Alveoli
*Diaphragm
Function of the Respiratory System
The main function of the respiratory system is to help us inhale oxygen and to exhale carbon dioxide.

The nose and mouth
We breathe in and out through our nose and mouth.
The air enters the nose where it is
*Filtered
*Warmed
*Moistened
Here the cilia protect the nasal cavity by catching all the dust particle. Any particles that escape the cilia is caught by the mucus that lines the nasal passage.
Trachea
The trachea is a wide, hollow tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lung. Its function is to provide air flow to and from the lungs for respiration.
Lungs
As you all know your lungs are in your chest and that it takes up almost most of the space. You have two lungs, that is protected by your rib cage. Beneath your lungs is the diaphragm and inside your lungs, you will find the alveoli and the bronchi.
The function of the diaphragm is to increase the volume of the chest cavity when the air is inhaled and to decrease the volume of the chest cavity when the air is exhaled.
The function of the alveoli is to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move between the lungs and the bloodstream.
In our next post, we will be discussing the Digestive System.

Question possibilities for teachers
After you have read through the above information please answer these questions:
- What parts does the respiratory system consist of?
- What is the function of the respiratory system?
- What happens to the air that entered the nose?
- What is the function of the trachea?
- What is the function of the diaphragm?
- What is the function of the alveoli?
- Complete the sketch.
