Toddler Science: Fizzing Ice Cubes (Learn Colours Too)!

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

It’s all about the school holidays for us at home. Our tot had his last day at Play Group on Tuesday and now it is time to whip up the big guns and keep our little wiggler entertained! Since it’s summertime here we are looking ways to cool down, so my idea was to kills two birds, no make it 3, with one stone! Cool down, have fun, learn some science!

Have Fun With Fizzing Ice Cubes!

Kids of all ages will enjoy this one, it is not only limited to toddler play. This nifty trick is so conveniently affordable as well, which is always a bonus, who needs expensive toys! In fact, you are very likely to have all the materials and ingredients in your cupboards already.

Here’s what you will need:

  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Ice Tray
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • A sensory play bin, tray or bucket

Instructions:

  1. This activity needs to be prepped a few hours beforehand, preferably overnight.
  2. Mix about a litre of water with 5 table spoons of baking soda.
  3. Pour the mixture into your ice tray.
  4. If you like you can add a few drops of different food colouring to each cube in the tray.
  5. Freeze until solid.
  6. Just before play time, allow them to defrost slightly.
  7. Add some vinegar to a bowl and let your little one/s spoon it over the ice cubes.
  8. Let the fizzing action begin!
  9. Let two different ice cubes fizz together to make a brand-new colour!

Vinegar (an acid) and bicarbonate of soda (an alkali) react together to neutralise each other. This reaction releases carbon dioxide, a gas which is the bubbles you see. - http://www.science-sparks.com/2013/07/22/baking-soda-ice-cubes/

I wish this kind of positive post was more prevalent on Steemit. Thanks.

Hi @arthur.grafo you could look under the steemiteducation tag for similar posts.

Thanks - though I have no kids, I was making a general remark, as I find most of the posts are irrelevant to our lives (art, fiction etc is relevant, even humour, I was not excluding them). I love posts that improve lives and was adding yours to that category.

Congratulations! This post was randomly selected and upvoted by @resteemr!
