The Banana Game
As a parent I want me child to have a good education. I want him to do well at school and prosper, but more than anything, my greatest wish for him is that he will have a kind heart and that his kindness will have a positive influence on those that cross his path.
So, in an effort to help spread love and kindness, I would like to share this educational game that teachers and parents alike can play with their kids. This is an awesome way to start laying the foundation for kindness, all while having fun!
The Banana Game
Age appropriateness: from 6 years onward
Number of players: a minimum of 10 players are required (an ideal class activity)
- Give each child a stack of five cards, 4 that have a different colored banana and one with a monkey. Use the image below as an example.
The goal of the game:
The objective is to have 3 bananas of the same color and no monkey. The first one to reach the objective is the winner and must shout out BA-NA-NA-NA!
Instructions:
- To play the game a child needs to ask another player for a color she is seeking. She can ask "May I have a green banana"?
- If the other player has the color, she/he MUST give her this color OR a monkey
- If the player doesn't have a green banana, she/he can hold on to his monkey (optional), and can tell you to go climb a tree (give someone a high five as the "climb the tree" act).
- Then it's that players turn to ask someone else for a colored banana
- They new player cannot ask for the same color that was just given away.
- You can play until all of the kids have reached their goal.
Topics of discussion:
- Who has no monkey and why did you give them away?
- How many kids have less than 1 monkey?
- How did you feel when your friend gave you a monkey? How do you feel when someone is mean to you?
- How many have more than one monkey and why did they keep them? *This shows a kind heart, empathy perhaps?
This is a little game that can go a long way. Not only does it instill a thought of care and kindness in its players, but it also strengthens logic and problem solving skills. It is a great activity to do at school, at summer camps or even as a birthday party game! My tot is still a little small to grab the concept, but as soon as he is old enough, this is a game I hope to play with him!
