Let’s Get Those Creative Juices Flowing! Creative Writing, Here We Come!

We were not all born writers, for some of us, getting the creative juices flowing and putting thoughts into words is far easier than others. This does not mean however that you cannot be a talented writer. In fact, writing skills are so easy to acquire and all you really need to do is follow the “tricks of the trade”.

To get you started and to scoot you in the “write” direction, I’d like to share three pieces of advice with you, which I still practice today. These tips are more guided towards encouraging creative writing and are not directly focused on perfecting grammar and punctuation.

First piece of advice:

Avoid editing your work while writing the first draft. Creating and editing are two very different things, one uses the right side of the brain and the other process uses the left side. If you try do both at once, you are likely to burn out faster, feeling tired and demotivated as a result. At first, just let the creative juices flow and put your thoughts into words. Once done, take a break and then come back to neaten and edit your work. Some writers I know turn their screens off completely while writing!

My second tip -

Read a Dictionary! OK, you don’t have to read it from cover to cover, but every now and then, scan it for some new and interesting words. A new word has the power to spark a creative thought, which then leads to a creative story. Challenge yourself to learn at least one new word a day, and then incorporate all the words you have recently learnt into your next essay or article. Nothing nudges creativity along like a good challenge!

Last but not least...

Step outside your door and write while watching the world go by. Enclosing yourself in room is in essence exactly like shutting your brain away into dark and stuffy box. Grab some pens and paper or fully charge your laptop in preparation for an outdoor adventure. Write while sitting in the park, enjoying a coffee at your local café or join book lovers at your local library. Watching people and being surrounded by different stimuli is what inspires a person and has a way of really niggling that creative bone that we ALL have inside of us.

Like I mentioned above, we are not all born with the talent to write, especially when it comes to entertaining readers, but we do all have the ability to learn how to write and create impressive pieces of work. Each individual also has that creative bone in their bodies, for some it might take a while to find it, but if you stay persistent and practice, you WILL find it and once you do, the sky’s the limit!
