If you are well informed in these areas, the words themselves will come easily. With the internet and social media platforms being the world’s current number one marketing portal, there is tons of work available for copywriters, making it a popular career choice for school leavers and even older generations.

  1. Choose one industry, and become a master at it. You won’t get far spreading yourself thin. So, chooses a field that genuinely interests you, and then study it diligently, from back to front. Being a Copywriter pretty much means that you need to be a professional in your chosen industry too.

  2. Read! Read books on Psychology mostly, with focus being on human instincts and impulses. Figure out what makes people want to buy into something, or what hooks their attention. Knowing what drives and individuals to chose one thing over the other will give you the inspiration you need to choose the right words.

  3. Attend marketing seminars. Not only is this a great way to learn the tricks of the trade and draw some inspiration, but it is also an excellent way to make some contacts and get your foot into the door.

  4. Market yourself. You can be your very first client! Set yourself with a website that offers examples of your work as well as you contact detail. Network on Social Media platforms and join Freelance Copywriting platforms like Upwork. 

  5. Observe what others are doing, and how they do it. Continuous research is very necessary on this filed, since the time change, and so do the desires of consumers. 


To add to these five steps, there’s also one other piece of very important advice I would like to share. You have to truly believe in the product or service you are writing for. If your heart’s not in it, or if you have to “lie” to make something sound awesome, then you will never come up with the most effective words.

Setting yourself up as a copywriter is the same as building a business from scratch. You’ve got to put in tons of effort at the start, prove your talent, and not expect the money to start rolling in immediately.
