Today I would like to raise the discussion of how education can be learnt, improved and encouraged through art; with the focus being on dancing as a form of art. From my experience and with some research, I have formed the opinion that implementing dancing as a lesson or incorporating it into lessons, is something that helps build a student’s character, especially in helping them to be independent, social and responsible beings.

At the school where I teach, we use dancing to help improve our students’ educational performances in general and the results are phenomenal. We call this method of general improvement: Character Education Through Dance.

Improving One’s Self And Education Through The Art Of Dance

The educational model that I follow runs on the ideology that helping to shape a character involves a good balance of the physical and spiritual self. When I refer to a person’s character, I mostly refer to a student's personality, a uniqueness that makes the student different from his or her fellow learners. The meaning of Character Education Through Dance is the development of student creativity in shaping the character through movement, which touches on both the physical and spiritual realms. 

Educating through the art of dancing has shown to manifest an increased appreciation for education by students in general. Especially since it helps to mold the minds of the students in a positive light. It helps improve behavior, calms the mind and reinforces an energy and passion for learning. Many of our students have developed a huge love for dance and it has become part of their routines, both in and out of school.

Note: Dance education should not be forced upon students, it is something that must be done willingly by the learners and implemented at their own unique pace. 

There are several goals of Character Education Through Dance:

• Students are exposed to deep spiritual experiences.
• There is an opportunity for individuals to express themselves through movement.
• It helps build one’s personality, in a positive light.
• It improves social skills by creating a common interest and passion among students

In essence, the idea is for dance education to help shape the mind’s and behavior of students, and individuals in general, so that they can have personalities that they are proud of. I believe a healthy personality is just as important as being knowledgeable.

My hope is that dancing will form part of all our educational systems and learning models so that students can express and develop the potential of the their existing selves and form independent characters that have a social and responsible mindset, with an eagerness to learn!
