STUDY OF STRESS AND HOW IT WILL BENEFIT YOUR STUDIES AND EXAMS (I'm not trolling)

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Before I start my study of stress, you probably notice that in the title I stressed out (no pun intended) the word "exams". Yes I know that we're in the holiday season, and most of you are already on vacations BUT don't forget that AFTER the holiday is over we/you still need to go back to school or work. And once you're back you'll experience stress again due to homework or assignments given to you BEFORE the holiday (you know what I mean if you're a student or a former student, those heartless teachers!), then there's the dreaded "FINAL EXAM!" or your boss' ugly mug if you're an employee (hope my boss's not reading this). Now that it's out of my system and gave you unnecessary pressure at the same time.

In this post I'll tackle the subject of stress, mainly psychological stress, and how it can affect study, work and your daily life. First let's go with the definition of stress, according to my friend Wikipedia; "psychological stress is a feeling of strain and pressure. Also this is one type of psychological pain. Small amounts of stress may be desired, beneficial, and even healthy. Positive stress helps improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation, adaptation, and reaction to the environment. Excessive amounts of stress, however, may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, dwarfism, and mental illnesses such as depression". So according to the definition, stress can be both beneficial and harmful to the body, and so in this study I will emphasize on how to use stress to our advantage.

So how is stress produce? According to my friend Wikipedia (again) stress is produce by stressors, and "stressors is any event, experience, or environmental stimulus that causes stress in an individual. These events or experiences are perceived as threats or challenges to the individual and can be either physical or psychological. Researchers have found that stressors can make individuals more prone to both physical and psychological problems, including heart disease and anxiety". To a student or the average person the cause of stress or the stressors are mainly environmental, this include our home ( abusive/ non supportive parents, domestic violence, poor household, etc.) school (homework, exams, bullies, etc) work (annoying co-workers, your boss, too much workload, etc) and of course our own neighborhood (gangs, noisy and unsafe neighborhood, drugs, peer pressure and more) or community ( so yeah those noises your pesky neighbors makes when they party are to be blamed too!). There are a lot more causes of stress but I will not go into those details instead I will now focus on how to cope with stress and harness it to our benefits.

Now let us explore the benefits of stress or "eustress' as it commonly know in the scientific community. Stress in the right amount can be bring positive results, this is especially true for sports as according to study those athletes who willingly put a bit of pressure on themselves performed much better than those who are either too relax or too nervous. This can also be applied to work or studies so last minute cramming before the exam will not work! And it's always better to give yourself a lot of time to study before any exams but of course you already knows that right? Low-level of stress helps in the production of brain chemicals called neurotrophins and strengthens the connection between neurons in the brain. In fact, this can be the primary mechanism by which exercising (a physical stressor) helps boost productivity and concentration. Short-term psychological stressors can have a similar effect, as well. Dealing with manageable stressful situations can make such situations in the future easier to handle. Stress often accompanies a breakthrough in creativity. Eustress can be the thing you need to get your job done at work. Stress even have positive effect on pregnant women. Stress at moderate levels can in fact be good for the child. A study found that children of most women who reported mild to moderate stress levels during pregnancy actually showed greater motor and developmental skills by age two than those of mothers who were unstressed.
