"We can, I can"

Under this theme, the international community commemorated the World Cancer Day, an appropriate time to raise awareness about the importance of its prevention and reduce cases of avoidable deaths.

World Cancer Day is celebrated on February 4 of each year, a disease responsible for almost one out of every six deaths worldwide. This date was established in 2010 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Center for Cancer Research (CIIC) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), in order to raise global awareness about this deadly disease, in addition to spreading the actions of prevention, early detection and control of it.

During the year there are several key dates in which it is about raising awareness in society to fight against different types of cancer:

    1. February 15: International Day of the Child with Cancer
    2. March 26: World Day for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer
    3. March 31: Colon Cancer Prevention Day
    4. May 8: World Ovarian Cancer Day
    5. June 11: World Prostate Cancer Day
    6. June 13: World Day for the Prevention of Skin Cancer
    7. October 19: International Breast Cancer Day
    8. November 17: International Day of Lung and Pancreas Cancer

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that deaths from this disease will increase 70 percent in the next two decades, since it is the second cause in the world. It represents 60 percent in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Cancer, a curable disease

Explains WHO:

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost any part of the body. The growths often invade surrounding tissue and can metastasize to distant sites. Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke. In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early.

Common myths about cancer

There is a great variety of myths about what may or may not cause cancer. One of the most common is if you can get it, but it's not true. According to the clinical network of the University of Chile, most types are produced by genetic alterations that appear throughout life.

Anticancer diet: Marta Blanco, doctor of the 'Infocancer' department of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), As he states, "they do not exist as such". Of course, the specialist believes that it is important to follow a series of beneficial recommendations, and take into account which are the foods whose consumption may be harmful.

New advances achieved

The specialists reiterate that an early detection is vital to face the cancer and to apply an efficient treatment. In 2017, immunotherapy was a breakthrough in this area by not focusing on the disease, but on the organ where it originates.
The drug was approved for melanoma and other types of tumors where cells are full of mutations in genes that repair DNA. The immune system does not recognize them and kills them.

Eat a little of everything?

Dr. Marta Blanco, doctor of the 'Infocancer' department of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), mentions in an interview with Infosalus that "30% of all cancer deaths could be avoided by means of modifications in the patterns food during our life". He considers that the fundamental thing is to follow a healthy diet, that is -"varied, balanced and moderate",_ eat a little of everything, as well as exercise.

He adds that fundamentally, we must have fruits and vegetables as our base, as well as whole-grain cereals and those foods based on complex carbohydrates (rice, potato, wholemeal flour, wholemeal pasta, cereals), an important base.

REFLECTION

Much of our life is dedicated to developing activities of personal growth and entertainment, including: academic, work, family, friendly meetings, among others. We strive to achieve the best of ourselves and embrace new challenges, just as we have healthy ambitions in our life projections; we focus so much on what we do and we want to end up neglecting some important and even primordial aspects, such is the case of our health, in the worst case we do not even set a time for routine medical check-ups. It is time to raise awareness and detect possible diseases in time. Cancer is a disease that in some cases does not show symptoms at the beginning, however if it is detected in its early stages the battle can be won.

Let's be in solidarity with those who fight against this disease, family, friends and social support, provide a harmonious environment and strengthen the spirit to move forward. A hug, a helping hand, a kind gesture is the least we can give.
