Steem Spanish class: Animals without grammatical genders

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

A few days back, I created a Spanish lesson explaining how genders work, and how using “El” and “La” can become a very easy task if you pay attention to the last letter of any noun. However, there are a lot of exceptions which may cause confusion to learners.
This time I’m going to show you some animal names, that don’t have grammatical genders despite the animals themselves are male or female. This can be quite less complicated because you only need to memorize one word for all of these animals, and if you need to really specify the genre of the animal, just add the words “macho” (male) or “Hembra” (female) next to the noun. I will show you some examples of animals with which you will only need to use ONE specific word.

So, let’s not beat around the bush!

I will write example sentences so you can learn some grammar too. I will also add the pronunciation in case you don't know how to pronounce it. The link will take you to Forvo, a page where native speakers from any countries record themselves to help create a dictionary with sound :)

Panda= Panda

Even though the pronunciation is slightly different, "Panda" is written the same both in English and Spanish.

Pronunciation

"El panda come bambú"

=The panda eats bamboo.

Ballena= Whale

pronunciation

Yep, if you are going to talk about a whale from steemit, you can also say "Ballena". Male whales are called "ballenas" but when it comes to little whales they are called "ballenatos", it doesn't matter if they are male or female.

"La ballena es muy grande."

= The whale is very big.

Ardilla= Squirrel

pronunciation

Curious fact: Squirrels are excellent tree planters. They store acorns in the ground in order to eat them afterwards, but sometimes they forget where they stored it, and a new tree grows up. source

They are also good at posing for the camera, as you can see :)

"A la ardilla le encantan las nueces."

= The squirrel loves acorns.

Cebra=Zebra

pronunciation

This one is also very similar to the English word, but the pronunciation is slightly different.

Did you know Zebra's stripes confuse the predators when a group of zebras is together? source

"Las cebras le tienen miedo al león."

= Zebras are afraid of the lion.

Koala= Koala

pronunciation

This word also means Fanny pack or waist pack, just like a lot of words in Spanish that have several meanings.

"El koala ama el eucalipto."

= The koala loves eucalyptus.

Foca= Seal

pronunciation

"Las focas son excelentes nadadoras."

= Seals are excellent swimmers.

And never say the word "foco" to refer to a male seal, because you will be talking about this...

This is all for today, I hope you learned something new, and let me a comment down below if you have any question or suggestion for the next topic. Thank you for reading!
