Dettol or Antiseptics act as disinfectants and are corrosive in nature. They contain alcohol as an active component. Alcohol has bactericidal and fungicidal properties and can destroy lipid encapsulated viruses.

When alcohol comes into contact with them, their proteins and lipid (present in the cell membrane and cell wall of microbes and viruses) are denatured resulting in lysis(the disintegration of a cell by rupture of the cell wall or membrane). When these antiseptics are applied on wounds, due to their corrosive nature they damage the all proteins in the tissues. This action stimulates the underlying sensory nerves leading to a sense of irritation. To reduce the corrosive action, use them in a diluted form.

Before applying First-aid

First-aid can be administered to minor wounds by applying to the following measures so that it does not become infected:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap.
• Wounds must be cleaned with antiseptic liquid.
• Ensure that person is lying or sitting down.
• The area around the wound must be properly dry.
