Making Learning English Fun : SimilesteemCreated with Sketch.

Learning = Fun

There are many ways to make learning fun. When the process is fun and departs from the normal route learning, it becomes memorable and it becomes a pleasant experience. For example by using music or rhymes. One of the more famous method of rerouting learning into a fun process can be seen in the famous scene from the musical ‘The Sound of Music’ and the lyrics goes something like this:

‘Doe a deer a female deer, ray a drop of golden sun...’

These lyrics are definition of words that will be remembered by singing a catchy tune. This method of learning is very much like rhyming, it builds a correlation between a melody and subject matter that is taught.

It plays subconsciously in the mind and music is often connected to a happy experience. Below is an example of how using another route of learning can make learning more eventful than mere words and memory works. I call this picture captioning.

Definition

Simile are words that are used to compare and connect two things in an interesting way that attributes the adjective or descriptive value onto the subject. The entire learning process is enhanced by having bright pictures which will attach itself to the phrase and leave a lasting impression, particularly if the person is a young child.

For example:
She is as beautiful as a princess.

Learning simile is an enriching experience because there is no limitation. It is not confined to the traditionally accepted simile and new phrase and expression could be coined. For example:

He is so knowledgable, he is our Wikipedia.

His house is as far as Pluto.

There is more depth and colours to a sentence if simile is used rather than a normal sentence construction. Here are a few example how it is more fun and vibrant when simile is used.

Normal construction : I do not understand your explanation.
With simile : Your explanation is as clear as mud.

Normal construction : They look alike.
With simile : The are like two peas from a pod.

Normal construction : I slept soundly yesterday.
With simile : I slept like a log yesterday.

Before ending this writeup, have you ever thought that in our daily life, simile are used to influence our decision and lifestyle. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)’s tagline
