CONNECTING A LAMP-HOLDER EXPLAINED! WITH IMAGES...

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone! Here's my second post on 'Engineering photography'

You see a lamp holder every day, but do you stop to know how it is connected? Do you know that while connecting a lamp holder you do not need to worry about polarity?

Lamp-holders look like this!

Let me tell you a little of what polarity means…

Red- live, black- neutral, yellow- earth.

Polarity as it relates to electricity simply means the direction or pathway of an electric field. You may have an idea of what changing the pathway of electricity or interchanging electric pathways may cause. Trust me, it can be deadly. It is something really serious.

You should connect the red wire to L (meaning live), the black wire to N (meaning neutral) and the yellow wire is the Earth.
See pictures above!!
Do that and you’ll be just fine.

Safety precautions

This part is really very important. Take note!
Before you start your connection, switch of the mains to your house. Make sure it is the off position. If you have a general house fuse. Simply pull it out first. With that done, you can now go close to wires!
Again, if you get confused at any point, look at the pictures here again and reread this post. Electricity isn’t something one should play with or do trial and error with. Also know that I am only just referring to little repairs here. When the connection gets too serious, make sure you call a technician. Your safety is of utmost importance.

Back to lamp holders

So, you now know what polarity is and its importance in simple connections. Let’s now connect your lamp holder!
Now connect the live and neutral wires to any of the two terminals as choice. I guess you now know which are the live and neutral wires. If you do not have red or black wire colors, brown is also live and if still no black, blue is also neutral.

But what do you do when you have the newer technology of lamp holders with three terminals.

Three terminal lamp-holders

Still be happy as there is still no polarity. Just connect the earth wire (usually yellow or greenish) to the last terminal and that's all.

@fr3world. yeah, you are correct!. Its the general convention taught here in Nigeria for screw lamp holders. Thanks for coming around and taking time to read bro. I appreciate your additional information. cheers!
