What are green schools?

Given the current environmental predicaments we are finding ourselves in, the concept of a green school is very important and is something that needs to be developed and initiated world-wide. Natural disasters might not be so natural after all, since it is our human way of living that is causing the environment and eco-systems to change. This is why the idea of Green Schools is currently being implemented in a few countries.

A Green School is not only set up outside in nature and in fact, made out of greenery, in the bigger sense of the name it is a school whose main objective is to educate student about the environment and how we can protect it. These "green schools" are committed schools which have systematically developed programs that raise the topic of environmental values into all school activities.
So, while you learn your ABC’s and practice your maths skills, you can learn about ways to protect your natural surroundings as well as how to respect nature. Some might say that these life lessons are more important than academics, because what use is academics in a dying world?
The school's main focus is on topics of land availability, water resources, energy, landscapes, the traditions of surrounding communities and last but not least, ecosystems.
Green School programs aim to:
(a) develop an environment-based curriculum;
(b) develop community-based education;
(c) improve the quality of the school environment and its surroundings;
(d) develop environmentally friendly support systems; and
(e) develop environmentally sound school management.
The implementation of Green Schools is carried out in three strategic steps: First, a curricular field, where environmental learning is done in an integrated manner with the existing subjects. Teachers must be good at planning lessons by incorporating the subject at hand with other life skills. Second, the extracurricular field where environmental counselling is given through extra mural activities. Third, the school is managed to be an environmentally friendly school, for instance:
(a) the school includes a vegetable garden, natural laboratories, a recycling programs, water restrictions and so on;
(b) the students are encouraged to respect the environment of the school itself by refraining from littering, wasting water and electricity etc.

The school environment is home to our future generations, it is up to them to keep the world running. With this in mind, it is extremely important that we teach them how to care for the world and how to respect it.
