Do you Know how did Social Security Number come to be?
Most Americans have a Social Security Number (SSN).
Do you know how did it come to be?
During the period of the Great Depression in 1930, Government started social security program, that was mandatory to receive pension after retirement. SSN was used to show the account number to keep record of social security benefit rights under Federal and State laws.
This program was only related to one's working life, so you only needed to apply for social security card when you started working. It was never meant to be used as a form of identification.
But with the passage of time it changed!
Thanks to US Tax Department, who started using SSN to track taxpayers. Tax Department even encouraged parents to give their children SSN in exchange for a tax rebate. So this transformed the number into a unique number that citizens were given from birth.
Soon institutions like banks and schools started using the number to keep tabs on people. Nowadays, if you want driving license, apply to college or want to own a home, you have to get Social Security Number first.
Now this nine- digit number has become the universal identifier.
