Science Experiments: How to Mix Oil and Water get together

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

There’s something very important about oil and water that you probably already know: oil doesn’t mix with water! That explains why oil spills on the ocean float on the surface and why throwing water on a grease fire is just going to make everything worse. Since you realize that oil and water don’t mix and never will (without some chemical help), let’s have some fun with how they repel each other.

Lots of materials around us that can not mix with each other, one of which is oil and water. You can try to mix it with each other and shake as hard as you like, but it turns out they still can not mix. But here Scholar will help the comrades to mix them with the following science experiments, so let's try together at home.
# What you need is: 1. Small bottle of soft drink 2. Water 3. Food coloring 4. 2 tablespoons of cooking oil 5. Detergent or dish soap

All you need to do is:

  1. Add a few drops of food coloring to the water.
  2. Pour about 2 tablespoons of colored water together with 2 tablespoons of cooking oil into the supplied drink bottle.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon dish soap or detergent into it.
  4. Close the bottle and shake the bottle as hard as you can.
  5. Notice the bottle, it will appear mixing of oil and water. Both will mix, but if kept silent, after some time the oil will still rise above the water surface.

What is Science said:

Water often mixes with other liquids to form a solution, but for oil it can not happen. Water molecules are very attracted to each other, as are oils, because they are more interested in their own molecules so they can not mix, with oils of lesser density always on the surface of the water.

But this can be different if a mixture of both is added with a few spoons of detergent. The detergent is able to bind with water and oil to help them mix with each other to form an emulsion. Detergent is a useful addition when washing oily dishes, because the detergent takes the oil and dirt off the plate and dissolves it into the water.
