Knowing the Stars

Many children show an interest in learning about Astrology and especially when the night comes, they enjoy watching the stars.

The stars, although only perceived as small luminous points, are actually large gaseous and luminous spheres, similar to our Sun, which emit their own light and can have different brightness and sizes.

Likewise, the stars produce energy through a process called nuclear fusion, this fusion happens when the lighter elements are forced to become heavier elements. When this process happens, a gigantic amount of energy is created causing the star to warm up and shine.

One of the doubts children have in their heads is: What are the stars made of?

In general, they are made of very hot gas, this gas is mostly hydrogen and helium, which are light elements.

How long are the stars?

Stars just like people are born, grow and die. The stars live a long time, but they all end up dying because they run out of fuel. As not all are equal, some last longer than others and suffer different processes.

How old are the stars?
The age of most stars varies between 1,000 and 10,000 million years, although some may be older.

Going deeper into the concerns of infants, many want to know why stars form figures in the sky, and the answer is obtained in:

The Constellations

They are apparent groupings of stars that for long periods of time show a seemingly fixed position in the sky.

In ancient times it was believed that the stars had no movement since the shape of the constellations did not vary over the centuries. Currently, it has been proven that they move around the core of the galaxy.

The constellations form figures in the sky, which man over the centuries and using the imagination has given them a name and used them to designate the various regions of the sky and to orient themselves.

The size of the stars

Due to the enormous distance that separates them from the Earth, at first glance, the stars seem very small to us. Determine the size of the stars is a big problem since the largest telescopes that have been built so far show only points and no discs.

Thanks to the use of special devices, astronomers have managed to know the size of some stars. Although there are really huge stars, on average the diameter of the stars goes from half to ten times the diameter of the Sun.

The brightness of the stars

The stars do not all shine equally. The brightness depends as much on their own luminosity as on how far they are from us. Astronomers use two scales to measure the luminosity of stars. The apparent scale indicates the brightness of a star seen from the Earth, while the absolute scale indicates the absolute brightness.
Novas and supernovas

Novas are stars whose brightness increases sharply and once the maximum is reached, their luminosity begins to decrease slowly for days or years.

Supernovas are the stars that in an interval of a few days increase their brightness by means of an explosion until they surpass in a million times the initial value and then extinguish quickly.

With the development of this theme, it is a starting point for children to get closer to Science. In addition, to deepen your Astronomical knowledge and encourage interest in various activities linked to this wonderful world.
