Dolphins- The most intriguing sea creature

Dolphins are one of the most intriguing animal species in the world.  They are far more intelligent than humans.

Dolphins are mostly carnivorous. They live in schools of up to twelve individuals, and play and live together in harmony. Because we live close to the ocean we see a lot of dolphins, and we often watch them surf the waves.  

Dolphins have good eyesight, but make use of echolocation to find their location. Bats also use echolocation and by using this they always know where they are.

Dolphins communicate with each other by making clicking sounds.  Some types of dolphins, are close to extinction due to nets being used for fishing, and a large number of dolphins are unnecessarily killed each year.  Bottle nose dolphins are the most common dolphin, but did you know that the Orca killer “whale” is actually part of the dolphin species and not a whale.   

Some interesting facts about dolphins:

• Dolphins are very maternal.  After their babies are born they cuddle and play with them.  When a mother dolphin is giving birth she has another dolphin on standby.  As soon as the baby is born, the other dolphin take the baby up to breath for the first time. This other dolphin is known as the "aunt dolphin"
• Dolphins are very helpful towards humans. This is their natural instinct and would usually protect fishermen as they are always found in the area.
•  Dolphins have very few natural enemies, and they can protect themselves very well, however pollution, fishing and other human factors causes the death of thousands of dolphins each year.
