Precautionary Measures Before, During, and After a Typhoon: A Performance Task

Philippines is always visited by typhoons. Just recently, Typhoon Basyang hit our country which affects the lives of many. Damages in crops and properties and loss of lives are just some of its effects to the community. Awareness and preparedness in case of calamities can help save lives.

A typhoon is a type of large storm system having a circular or spiral
system of violent winds, typically hundreds of kilometers or miles in
diameter. The winds spiral around a region of low atmospheric
pressure. "Typhoon" is the name of these storms that occur in the
Western Pacific. "Hurricane" is the name given to these storms in the
Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific. In the Indian Ocean, they are
called "Tropical Cyclones". For stronger typhoons, a characteristic
structure called the "eye" forms when the maximum wind speeds exceed
about 85 miles per hour, or 140 kilometers per hour.

Precautionary measures before, during, and after a typhoon is one of our topics for this quarter. For this reason, as part of their performance task, the pupils are grouped into four. Each group is assigned a task.

This is Group 1 the Poet. Here is a copy of their poem in Tagalog.

Bagyo, bagyo paparating na ang bagyo
Mga tao magsilikas na kayo
Evacuation center inihanda
De-latang pagkain, de-bateryang ilaw

Hearing their composition makes me proud as a teacher. By the way, I allow them to use any dialect they like to better express their ideas.

Group 2 The Reporters. This group is assigned to make a news report on the effects of typhoon in the community . Look at their cameramen. They utilized all their members. Some played the victims and they too are interviewed as what we see on TV.

This is Group 3 The Singer/Composer. They are tasked to make a jingle on the precautionary measures before, during, and after a typhoon. Here is their jingle to the tune of Baby Shark.

Group 3 The Actors. This group is tasked to do a role play on the effects of typhoon.

Why is it good to be informed?

As I mentioned earlier, our country is always visited by typhoons. Some are bearable while some have been very destructive. It is good to inform the children of these precautionary measures to keep them safe. Remember,"Mas ligtas ang may alam"

Precautionary Measures Before a Typhoon

Before a Typhoon

1 Prepare enough food to last for 3 days
2 Listen to radio or tv for updates on the coming typhoon
3 Prepare flashlights and extra batteries in case of power interruption
4 Prepare an emergency kit.
5 Check your electric posts to prevent accidents.
6 Cut all branches of trees around your house that could possibly fall on your house.
7 Pack a bag with clothes, batteries, flashlight, water, canned goods and other necessities, in case you have to evacuate.

During a Typhoon

1 Stay calm and be alert.
2 Stay indoors. Cancel any plans of travels.
3 Monitor the weather reports. Check what is happening around you.
4 When local authorities advise you to evacuate, do so.
5 Be ready to evacuate if necessary.

After a Typhoon

1 Clean your house from any typhoon debris.
2 Check for any damages brought by typhoon. Repair if necessary.
3 Boil your drinking water before drinking for your safety.
4 Stay away from broken posts.
