ATTITUDE FORMATION

Attitudes are relatively permanent and enduring because once attitudes are established, they help to shape the person’s interaction and experiences with the attitude object. These experiences can also come from the kind of information we receive and the way the information is organized as well as the way the attitude object itself will behave.
Human beings are not born with particular attitudes as such attitudes are not inherited rather attitudes are acquired. However, a person’s genetic predispositions can influence acquisition of attitude.

From birth to puberty, siblings and other members of the family shape a person’s attitudes because during this time, members of the family are the major source of information for the person – children. For age 12 to 30 most of a person’s attitude take a final form or crystallizes. This is also the critical period in attitude formation. Members of the family teach attitudes by what they model (examples of their expressions of like or dislike). Children also learn their parents values and as a result of this they dislike people with dissimilar values. Children, even adults also imitate the attitudes of popular individuals and those they admire and respect.
Peer group influences, information from news media, television, and other sources; and education help to shape attitudes during the critical period. Peers are an individual’s associates who are like the individual in age and education level.

An individual accepts peers as authorities because he or she likes them and finds them easy to talk to. Through observation, imitation and the need to conform, peers influence attitude formation.
Environmental conditions can shape new attitudes and intensify existing ones. People compete with one another for a number of things such as jobs, houses, property, social status, power, and the like. During the later part of the critical period (young adulthood), attitudes become crystallized through commitment and the reduction of cognitive dissonance. Except for a slight conservative drift as one gets older, basic attitudes change little in the years of adulthood.

ATTITUDE CHANGE

Human beings change attitudes as they engage in inter- personal relationships, belong to groups or find themselves in particular situations. In fact attitude change is part of the ongoing process of living and sometimes the amount of attitude change is extreme. However, the person who is trying to change another’s person attitude (who you are), the strength of the attitude to be changed, the magnitude of the change, and the technique chosen for changing the attitude are important in the process.

Excellent post Certainly the attitude is very important to achieve success in life. The "predisposition to" helps us achieve or not the goals. The better the attitude, the better chance of success. Thanks for sharing.
