How To Prevent Identity Theft Online

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

I read @acidyo's post few days ago about an individual who stole someone's identity to use for his/her introductory post. The introductory post generated high rewards, when the so called "owner" now joined steemit.com she didn't receive much attention.

Online privacy seems to be a problem these days, as cases of identity theft is increasing. There are some simple steps that can be helpful to keep you safe from identity theft.

You need to take into cognisance the security of websites you visit. Some websites can steal your information. You can use browsers that are secured, they can help prevent some of these phishing links from popping up. Having a browser that is security "conscious" is important.

Encrypted messaging apps could be used instead of some native ones. Popular messaging apps like Whatsapp support end-to-end messages encryption. This way your private information cannot be stolen.

Also consider how much amount of information you give in your social media profiles. By viewing some profiles on Facebook, you can know almost everything about the individual. You don't need to tell much about yourself, gradually you can reveal to people as you get to know them. Information you should consider leaving out at first could include your hobbies, birth day, places you have worked etc.

Don't use the same password for multiple sites. I personally have suffered from this, so I'm speaking from experience. My twitter accounts, facebook and emails were all hacked because they had similar passwords. If you use the same password, if they hack one successfully, it is easy to hack the others.

Getting stolen accounts back takes rigorous processes and the amount of information stolen can not be known. To prevent that, you could use a password manager, if you feel it will be too difficult to remember your passwords.

If you notice there is any tip I missed, or you have an additional tip, it will be much appreciated. Let's go eat some popcorns in the comment section.

What i will add is to write down as well on a notebook all the passwords. It's very easy and simple and extremely safe in the same time.
I am adding this because i forget my password from the BitShares wallet and i am still trying now to see what i add that time as i have a lot of coins there... imagine if i had written down all my passwords on a notebook!

Yes, thanks alot for adding this. Backing up passwords in a notebook is very helpful.

Very informative post. Thanks for sharing

I did use a password manager, but I was always afraid that someone would hack that account and they'd have all my passwords.

That's true, I think that it has a flaw. The password manager could have a password though.

I'll have to do something about my password. It's the same for everything. I simply cannot remember them. The notebook will definitely work for me

That's not really safe, you should use different passwords. Thanks for coming around :)

A password manager. How is that used?

A password manager could be an application or a software were you store all your passwords. The password manager would also have its own password.

okay. thanks.
