The soil is the loosely attached layer found on the earth surface. Many of us walk on the soil but forget or don’t know its value. While those who know its value differ in the way they perceive its meaning.

What the soil is to some people

1. To the house wife, she considers it as dirt, while chemists consider it as a storehouse of nutrients.

1. Geologists on their own part consider soils as a disintegrated and more or less decomposed rock material mixed with organic matter from plant decay. To engineers, the soil is considered as any unconsolidated material regardless of depth or mode of formation while to a civil engineer, the soil is any material on which a road bed is to be placed.
   Therefore everyone differs in the way they perceive this resource.
2. Soil to an agronomist and farmer, it is the natural medium for the growth of land plants.

To the soil scientist, it refers to the unconsolidated material on the earth surface formed as a result of integrated effects of climate and living organisms acting upon parent material conditioned by relief over a period of time. This soil around is a mixture of minerals, nutrients, organic matter, organisms, liquids, and gases which together support life. The science that deals with the study of soil is termed soil science.

Soil science as a field is the science that deals with the systematic study of soils as a non-renewable (or very slowly renewable) resource which should be judiciously managed so that it could serve our generation and future generations. A person who specializes in soil science is called a soil scientist.

Since plants need soil (for anchorage) and nutrients (for growth), the need to manage our soil remains crucial. To be able to ensure sustainable food production, as it is obvious that food security is the basis for survival, there must be efficient and judicious use of this resource.
