PHILIPPINES’ FIRST EVER 24/7 PUBLIC LIBRARY: NOW OPEN HERE IN CEBU!

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)
People nowadays are relying too much on the internet, phablets, and tablets for reading and also gathering information. They can either do it in the convenience of their own homes or lately, there’s a trend among youngsters and adults alike to work or study in coffee shops.

However, despite the increase in internet usage and the introduction of e-books to readers, there's still that one special place where perfect studying and reading can be done, the library! The perfect place that can offer a quiet oasis making it very conducive for getting some really serious studying done. Focusing on your studies without even hearing a noise or seeing some people chit-chatting while eating or sipping drinks, I could tell that this is your PLACE!

Rizal Memorial Library & Museum Building.

Way back in college, libraries were very common places for students and people whenever we do some researches, assignments and even write about something. Still, when I took my masters degree, despite the fact that researching some information on your smart phones can be helpful enough but you can still go to libraries, for the very reason that there are hard to find books and vital information unavailable on the internet.

So now, what better way to spend the rest of my evening but to pay Rizal Memorial Library & Museum Building a visit. Located at Osmena Blvd, I am sure you will never miss this pre-WWII building.

A BRIEF HISTORY:

The building was constructed in the area of Fuente Osmena in a lot donated by Sergio Osmena Sr. It is said that in 1938, this Library found it’s spacious three-storey home. As seen in the picture, the statue of Rizal sitting down with children upon his knees, reading a book is placed in front of the building. There’s a plaque at its feet donated by Don Ramon Aboitiz. In history, as I have asked and searched that on April 10, 1942 Japanese occupied and invaded Cebu City. The building was used by them as their headquarters. They transferred some materials and books to the Capitol Building for them to have the place to stay, they dumped them in one place and most of the books and materials were destroyed. When the time that the Americans came, the building were bombed to get rid of the Japanese, but the building wasn’t completely ruined because the structure and the foundation of the building were very strong, only a little repairing done after the war.

Getting in to this Public Library actually has some rules for you to follow. I met Miss Abi, one of the staff in the public library and asked her about it. It is then posted in front of the door wherein you can check it out if you are allowed to enter the place or not.

READ BEFORE YOU ENTER:

(There are proper dress codes to be followed.)

  • NO caps, visors, hoods, bandanas or any other head gear except with administrative permission.
  • NO halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps or muscle shirts.
  • NO shorts.
  • NO slippers. Preferably closed shoes or sandals.
  • NO FOOD outside is allowed.
  • OBSERVE SILENCE!

It was almost night time when I got to the place, I could see a lot of students, reviewers and some people who were there, they were reading, writing and checking some books for them to read. The place was so spacious and a lot of space to sit. As my eyes roamed around, long tables, lots of shelves were placed on the side, books from different subjects, there are novels for you to read freely if you want. And oh! They do have free wifi if you may ask where you can also search something from the internet for references too and it is an air-conditioned place. There’s this quote that I have read about books it says, “When you open a BOOK, you open a NEW WORLD.”

I myself was not that really studious to go to a library or a place to study for my finals and do some assignments but staying and seeing these people would make you realize you could have enjoyed studying together with your classmates and friends, sharing ideas and giving some information through the books you’ve got from the shelves. There are tons of books you can see in this public library, from primary subjects like Language Arts, Math, Science, English, and Reading to different subjects from University courses.

WHY STAY AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY?

There are many reasons why libraries exhibit a good impact on the achievement of students, here are some:

  1. The place is meant to support the students in their studies.
  2. Students are given tasks to finish after school hours and they can visit the library to finish those.
  3. A library opens the world for the student.
  4. Apart of text books, students need also reference books.
  5. Students can develop literary skills by reading rare books.
  6. A library is an appreciable place for studies and mental development.
  7. A library promotes in building a knowledge-driven community for the future.

It is indeed simply common knowledge that a lot of people or students spend the late night hours cramming and studying, this is the purpose of having a 24/7 public library in Cebu City. A lot of students might be studying elsewhere but not gaining adequate resources they need but for this Public Library, the Rizal Memorial Library, they can extend their hours in studying here because it is a 24 hour public library.

So what are you waiting for? You can visit and spend more time studying in the Public Library.

Thank you for checking my post. :)

We're really very fortunate to have this in our very own city. I think a satellite 24/7 library is being cooked up. I hope more places and cities in the Philippines would follow suit @iamqueenlevita!

hello Miss @raquelita, indeed, hoping that there are other places would love to have this 24 hour library for people. It is really at the center of the city so it's easy to locate and accessible also. Have you tried visiting there? When I went there at nigh time the only open was the library, museum on the 2nd floor is open at day time only from 8:00AM-5:00PM. It is actually wide inside and air-conditioned.

Thank you for commenting on my post. :)

Yes, before when I was still a student. We go there to study, but it was closed at 5pm and M-F only. It kinda felt outdated before, I'm glad it's not now by looking at your pics😀

Me too @raquelita, I remember my classmates and I visited this place way back when we were college students, we could really have this "history vibe" when we entered the place. The inside of the place has changed a bit, it became wider. But because lots of books were stored on the shelves, novels and some educational materials too, people come often and stay there for longer hours. It is very helpful for reviewers and students who really want to study hard. Thanks for appreciating my pics too. :)

we will try to visit later. as soon as the kids will promise to behave.😀

Oh wooow that’s great miss @raquelita and remember lang sa rules, dress code nila to be followed jud hehehehe. It’s really nice to visit in the evening. The library is beautiful to look at because of its structure. 🤗

Hello I'm not sure this is appropriate for a steemstem tag. It' meant for STEM = Science-Technology-Engineering-Maths.

Please try to use appropriate tags. Thank you.

@physics.benjamin oh my apology. Thank you for the information.

This is a good innovation

@jeff-dawn, a new way and good method on how students be productive on their studies. The place itself can give a comfortable feeling for them to study. thank you

this is very helpful to all Filipino's , most specially to our youth of today, and we are lucky that we have this public library ..:) thanks for sharing

Ma’am @reginecruz thank you for commenting maam, yes agree to that, really helpful for the youth, not only this but it’s a 24/7 public library, no need to worry because there’s a security guard 24/7 too. Thanks maam. ;)
