Memorization Learning And Learning Through Understanding

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

Recently, I read an article that stated that the era of memorization has expired and must be replaced by a more advanced method, that is, the method of understanding. Rote methods have become outdated in the educational field since they have little creative value, says the following source:

I opened up a discussion about memorization with my students. We debated whether simply memorizing work was enough, or if understanding, without memorizing, was more advantageous.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Memorization Method

Memorizing means to commit something to your memory, so that you don’t forget it. We use our senses to focus on a lesson or object (or even a moment in time), so that we can remember it for years to come. But when we do this, it is almost like a picture is printed on to our brain, instead of us understanding the knowledge or moment, to allow it to become a piece of our minds.

By simply memorizing something, we skip learning the ability to have an opinion, or to hypothesis on the subject. My students also agreed, that because of this lack of understanding in the memorization learning method, we lose the opportunity to create our own ideas, since our learning stops at the point of memorization.

Most Memorizing Techniques Are Administered As Follows:

When applying the method of memorization, there are 3 popular kinds techniques, namely:

  1. Reading the learning material over and over again, and then repeating it to yourself verbatim.
  2. Listening to a presentation of the learning material, and then repeating the information to a teacher.
  3. Reading the new knowledge and then writing it out again and again, until it is imprinted on your mind.
Can you think of any other methods that help you to memorize something?

How Can You Apply The Method Of Understanding?

The best way to learn, in my opinion, is to 1. actively participate in the lesson (like doing science experiments where you learn about cause and effect), or 2. watch a demonstration of the lesson (for instance, someone could act out a play by Shakespeare during your English lesson). In these types of demonstrations, your brain is actively working and participating in the lesson, instead of simply memorizing it.

In Conclusion

Both learning methods have their pros and cons, the con being in the Understanding Method is that you could possibly “misunderstand” the lesson at hand, which isn’t going to help you much come exam time. Like everything in life, balance is key, which was the final consensus my students and I came to. So, balance the two learning methods, by memorizing and trying to understand as much as you can.

Hello friend, good article, congratulations. I think that "developing an adequate understanding is the task of the family and the school". While your children are at home, be sure to start with that initial task. Greetings and may God bless you, my friend. @hubbi

Thank you, you are very kind to have prayed for me @saracampero
