The Wolf That Howled Hunter - A Children's Story About Lying

There was a baby wolf walking in the forest at night looking for something to hunt because he couldn’t sleep with a grumbling stomach.

Moon was a lone wolf who had no parents and only had the pack to protect him, who were fast asleep. He would chase bunnies and squirrels, but those prey were too fast for him without the help from the others. His legs grew tired and were too small to catch anything. Being disappointed and frustrated with himself, he gave a great long howl at the moon.

The pack awoke hearing Moon’s howl and jolted out of the den to him. They split up climbing up the mountain and down the trail. When they showed up, the baby wolf knew you were only supposed to howl when there is danger, so he came up story that he saw a hunter nearby.

All of them looked around and scanned the trees, but there was no hunter to be found. The pack turned around to headed to the den and they all fell back asleep.

The chief of the wolves was wiser than the others. He could tell he was lying, so he stayed behind and spoke to the baby wolf and told him, “Only use that howl when you are in danger, son. Not for anything else.”

The chief picked up the pup in his mouth and took him back to the den to sleep with the rest of them. His appetite was gone because of how guilty he felt, so he closed his eyes and went to sleep laying next to the chief.

The next morning, he went to join his friends, Shadow and Bane, to play. However, they didn’t want him playing with them after what happened last night. Good wolves always listened to their parents.

Shadow’s and Bane’s parents told them last night, “You don’t want to be caught playing with a liar because then everyone will think you are a liar too.”

He ran away from the group because he was so upset and started to howl in pain. Some of the pack came and the others didn’t believe him, so they stayed put. They split up climbing the mountain and down the trail.

When they showed up, the baby wolf knew you were only supposed to howl when there is danger, so again he told them a story that he saw a hunter nearby. They looked all around and scanned the trees, but there was no hunter to be found.

Not surprised, they didn’t find anything.

The chief of the wolves and the others could tell he was lying the second time, so they stayed behind and yelled at the baby wolf and told him, “Do not howl again because we won’t believe you. We won’t be made fools of again.”

The pack turned around and headed to the den where they all went to sleep. He was a lone wolf who had no parents and only had the pack to protect him, who were fast asleep. Moon’s last howl attracted the very thing he was lying about.

A hunter was strolling in between the trees and coming right towards him with his shotgun. Moon started howling for as long and loud as he could. Those howls were really a warning of a hunter this time, but no one came; nobody even budged.

The forest was silent except for a thud.
