Some things just can't be learned at school
Although teachers try their best and make some subjects as interesting as possible, there are just those things that a child can't fully learn at school. Of course, teachers can teach children everything there is to know about a cow - what they eat, how they eat, what sounds they make, where they live, what they produce, etc, but is this really a cow?
I chose this picture because this is exactly how cows are introduced to young children, and fair enough, this is probably what will draw their attention.
What a cute looking cow this is. See how he smiles for the "camera" and note how the flies look very friendly too. In reality, though, cows don't smile and flies are definitely not very cute. Suppose you were to teach a young child that this is a cow, and you then bring a real cow into the classroom, what would his or her reaction be? Perhaps he/she might ask "What is that?" and may even be scared because this cow is huge and not friendly-looking at all.
Okay, so scratch that, NOW this is a cow:
Looks kind of like a grown Jack Russell with a close-up shot, yeah yeah, except for the bump on the head and the ears of course, but although this is a real cow, they are still unable to grasp the size, the smell, the feel and the sound.
While you as a teacher can do anything possible to teach children about cows, it's still just a lesson of a cow.
How about things like:
- Growing plants and planting seeds
- Silly science experiments
- Making tea
- Cooking
- Saving money
These are only a few examples, but do they get the actual experience for doing things like this at school?
Explanations about how things work are not always effective enough. They sit in classrooms and lessons are given in a period of time until moving on to something else. Although it's good for them to learn these things at school, they should be prompted to try some of it at home too, if they aren't homeschooled already. Of course, parental consent and involvement is extremely important and they should never do anything without supervision.
Take your children to farms, teach them how to make a cup of tea safely, and teach them anything that can't be taught at school. They'll learn responsibility from it and even though they are learning, it will not feel like boring homework to them. They'll actually be interested! By doing this, parents are making it possible for their children to fully understand the lessons their teachers are giving them at school. It is not always possible and teachers do not always have the resources available to take children on field trips and for example, boil a kettle in a classroom full of children as there are many risks involved.
Is there a better way to learn than to learn with your senses?

I regret the first real cow my daughter saw. She was a little taken aback!

This is very helpful, thank you @ghostgtr!
We're expecting a baby boy and he'll arrive very soon now. We have a lot to learn about parenting and I agree that life will give the children a lot of opportunity to grow and be independent. I think we need to stop treating them as merely kids, but open up the opportunity for them to experience life and improve in their own pace, one step in a time.
Congratulations! I've got 3 children and I can't imagine life without them. Kids really enjoy when you make time for them and teach them things. Good luck, I wish you all the best!
Thank you!! We know what's coming up, sleepless nights and so on but it will truly be a great joy in our life!!
Nice share and good point
Thanks @pegarissimo
Most of these are covered in Montessori - Just need to find the 'right' school :)
Good luck with the search man!
Loved your post yes we have many different things to keep in mind for our children. Just teaching is not all me must make them see life differently.
I so agree with this - we have an syllabus and we tend to stick to it just to get through the year and get kids ready for exam - that is why I love homeschooling, the things you can do with your child is so exciting. I also love my school because kids are on the internet to come to class and they can do a lot of extra research and then when they are done with what I taught them, they can go out and experience things for themselves. There are so much more to life that what your teacher says:) Wish all parents will see that
I agree with you
