Voice care for teachers
It is very common for teachers to get sore throat.
There are also many who overused their voice causing it to become hoarse or raspy.
The fact is that we need to use our voice to teach or facilitate learning.
Without a healthy voice, we will have great difficulty in conducting our lessons effectively.

This article will share some ideas on how to take care of our throat.
Common voice problems
Infections in the Upper respiratory
Inflammation
Overuse and misuse of vocal
Sore throat
Hoarse or raspy
Spasmodic dysphonia
Ideas to prevent voice problems
- Get a portable mic if your school allows it
Do voice warm-up before the start of lesson
Use hand sign or bell to get pupils’ attention rather than shouting
Drink ample amount of water
During winter or dry climates, use a humidifier
Avoid alcohol or caffeine
Maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet
Get enough rest
Use our voice prudently
When our voice is hoarse, avoid using it.
Avoid screaming causing strain on the throat
Avoid whispering
Use proper breathing techniques
Project our voice correctly
Avoid raising voice in crowded area
Rest when sick
Get advice from speech pathologist
In conclusion
Without healthy voice, we are not able to teach effectively even if we are good teachers with great teaching strategies.
Without our voice, we cannot communicate properly with our own family members.
It is therefore our responsibility to take good care of our throat even when we are out of school.
