Novice Experience Using TamperMonkey

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

Whaleshares platform has recently gone through another hardfork.

With this new hardfork, there are many new exciting features but there is just one bug at the moment that may take a bit of time for whaleshares developer to solve it.

The new hardfork had caused my slider for upvoting not to appear even when I went setting to configure it more than once.

This result in upvoting posts at 100% each time.

I went on to whaleshares discord to share about this.

@ijmmai suggested a solution by @alexpmorris to install a script via TamperMonkey.

I was really reluctant to do so since I am paranoid about security issue and there were quite a number of negative reviews about TamperMonkey online.

In the end, I stepped out of my comfort zone to install TamperMonkey which is an extension on my Microsoft Edge Browser.

The following would be my short sharing about my experience following @alexpmorris’ guide from his article.

A great thank to @alexpmorris for sharing this guide.

Find A Safe Download
In the article of @alexpmorris, he did share a link to download from TamperMonkey.
https://www.tampermonkey.net/

I wanted to ensure that I downloaded a safe version so I went to Microsoft Store by clicking on my Microsoft Logo on desktop. (Below was a screenshot from my desktop)

I was able to find TamperMonkey to install it successfully.

The below image is indicated as launch since I have already installed it. You would see install instead actually before installing it from Microsoft Store.(Below was a screenshot from my desktop)

Adding a script for upvote slider

After installation, nothing happened and I was wondering why.

I guess it needed a bit of time to get things ready.

Following @alexpmorris’ instructions, I went to the dashboard of TamperMonkey to copy and paste the script from https://github.com/alexpmorris/crypto-playpen/blob/master/whaleshares_v2_settings.js

The only missing step after adding the script that @ijmmai did point out as comment in the article of @alexpmorris is to save the script after pasting the script.

Running The Script

I opened my Microsoft Edge but no script was running at all.

I was wondering whether I had to do anything else.

After exploration, I found out that the script would only be running actively when I am on the webpage of whaleshares.

Each time when I access whaleshares webpage, a popup would appear to activate the default whaleshares setting and enable slider by clicking ‘ok’. (Below image was a screenshot from my Microsoft Edge Browser)

The script worked like magic indeed.

My Personal Security

As I do not know the mechanism behind the script and TamperMonkey, I found a way to make myself feel safer when I am not on whaleshares.

I can totally turn off TamperMonkey through the extension tab on my Microsoft Edge Browser. (Below was a screenshot from my Microsoft Edge Browser)

Since I often carry out internet banking and other transactions, I guess it gives me security knowing TamperMonkey is not running on the background.

In Conclusion

Learning is a never-ending process. We learn each day in different ways.

I have indeed learnt from @alexpmorris through his post on how to run a script on TamperMonkey to solve my upvote slider problem.

Stepping out of my comfort zone has enabled me to learn something new that actually helps me.

With this article, I guess someone would find something useful to learn from the point of view of a novice user of TamperMonkey.
