Hope giver

Teachers have the most amazing job as we can be the hope giver to children who feel hopeless with their family situation.

Even though teachers cannot change the current situation in their family but we can provide them with hope for their own future.

Teachers can change the destiny of a child with their unwavering belief that every child has a bright future regardless of their present academic performance or behaviours.

Believe

As teachers, we want our students to be good at the subjects that we are teaching but getting good results may not mean our students are guaranteed with a bright future.

Doing well in their studies can open up to more future job opportunities but academic performance is not the only way to success.

I have taught many students who are unable to follow the rest of the students in their studies.

The most important thing that I desire to do for these students who are unable to do well is to believe that they can continue to improve as long as they do not give up.

They must believe that examination results do not determine their ability for continuous learning.

As long as they do not give up, learning slowly can eventually help them to acquire the skills that they need in future.

By believing in themselves, they can be lifelong learners even if they take more time than others.

Resilience

As teachers, we should instil the attitude of never give up even if students do not find success.

The attitude of keep trying regardless of failure can lead them to future successes.

The fact that some students who have never tasted failures may even commit suicide when they face their first failure in later part of their lives.

We must teach our students to take failure as stepping stones for successes to come.

Regardless of their future jobs, this attitude can help them to stay positive regardless of situation.

They can also become the change factor for others around them.

Self-worth

Our students must believe that they exist with unique value in this society.

Every child has a destiny and talent but it may take a longer time to discover for some.

Build the self-worth away from academic performance.

Look for gems among those who feel hopeless and useless.

Get them to see their own talents and value with confidence for a bright future.

There are many ways for future successes and may not be measured by the amount of money we earn.

A teacher recently shared with me that her student, who was rather hard to handle with poor academic performance when he was young, grew up to become the head of a social community that help the needy.

This ex-student may not earn well like others but he finds satisfaction in helping others and she felt proud of having such a student.

Cultivate self-worth in our students is therefore essential for their future.

In conclusion

I have only touched on three main points but the core is to believe in every child and get them to believe in themselves.

Give hope that they can be successful in their own ways regardless of academic performance.

Success should not be measured by the results from examinations but the nurturing and cultivating each child to their possible potential based on their talents and abilities.
