Fight of faith

in #steemiteducation8 years ago (edited)

It was few years ago that my mum had to go through a major operation due to an enormous lump on her womb as well as a smaller lump at her kidney.

During this operation, she had to remove her womb and one of her kidneys as the lumps could be cancerous.

It was an extremely terrible experience for her.

It was also a difficult time for the whole family.

This short article is to share about my experience and the need to be supportive during this time of struggle.

Empathy

It is easy for many people to say that they understand what we are going through during difficult times especially when our family members suffer from serious disease.

There are many people who may verbally say kind words but we know that most of them do not know what we are going through emotionally and physically.

Emotionally, someone related to us is going through physical suffering and there is nothing we can do except to be there for them.

Physically, our sleep and energy are drained because of the daily visit and long hours at the hospital.

During this time of struggle, we must also keep our emotion in check and those who may show their empathy to us, we must just thank them regardless of how much they can understand our actual situation.

I know many may get frustrated with all the appearance of concern since not all of them are genuine.

Coping with our work

My mum stayed in the hospital for a long period of time even after operation due to many complications with lots of emergencies.

As a school teacher, it was not right for me to abandon my school work especially for classroom teaching that would affect my students’ learning.

I continued to go to school and rush to the hospital with my marking and other school stuff.

I did my school work while I was at the hospital as well as night time when I was at home.

During this period, the head of department did not have a subject head so I was made her assistant with the running of the Mathematics department.

It was a battle between coping with school work and providing the emotional support by physically there for my mum at the hospital.

During this period, people who are going through the same situation like me, remember to eat well and learn to calm your emotion as stress level can be extremely high.

Emotional support

As family members, we were there to provide the emotional support for my mum.

During this period, my mum was very negative and she desired to end her life from her misery.

There were many needles on her body and she went into the operation theatre more than once as there were other complications.

We were regularly changing wards and we also went to the intensive ward more than once.

Our emotions were constantly being tested and we had lots of fears.

During this period, we need to provide positive and encouraging words to the person who is suffering.

Regardless of what the situation is, we must stay positive and show our love and concern.

There is nothing we can really do and we can feel helpless since we are not doctors.

Prayer

Regardless of your religion, it is good to pray. As a Christian, I had other Christian school teachers who kept us in their prayer list and we also had church members who were praying for us then.

Things may look hopeless when we are in the situation so prayer can give us hope to continue the journey when we can believe a God who can help us in our situation.

With prayer, our inner heart has hope to carry on our difficult journey even though emotionally and physically we are very drained and tired.

In conclusion

This article is not just to share my experience but I hope that it can help readers who may face the same situation in the present or future.

We can feel really helpless when we see our loved ones suffering and we can do nothing but being physically by their side can make a difference.

We must also take care of our own health as we cannot be there if we fall ill so we must eat well and rest when we can.

I absolutely hate hospitals. I've spent so dammed much time in them watching and waiting...

Actually, in this case I do understand. And if I say the kind words to you it is because I do understand and mean them. BTDT and actually know the drill. Far too well.

I think the most important part is to take care of yourself. If I am all strung out over the deal I'm no good at all to the person I am supporting.

Thanks for a great reminder for all of us.

Thank you very much for reading my article and your encouragement. It means a lot for me!
