Classroom routines

It is important to have a good routine even in our daily lives. It makes things more organised as well as enables us to complete tasks in an orderly manner.

Why do we need routines?

  • Increase productivity by completing recurring tasks.

  • Without routines, we can become disorganised, poor momentum and classroom discipline starts to occur due to too much time gaps.

Establish routines

  • Be explicit and clearly state the important details of your routines

  • Model and repeat your routines to ensure your pupils understood them clearly.

Set ground rules

  • One voice (One person to share each time)

  • No going toilet during lesson

  • 5-min break when teacher is able to complete teaching

  • Reward chart for good behaviour. (Weekly, monthly or termly)

Routine of discipline

  • Avoid shouting bu reason with pupils

(Overuse of shouting would result it to be ineffective when you scold them for more serious offences)

  • Investigate a conflict/offence before jumping into conclusion

(Fairness to gain trust)

  • Address issue or behaviour and not the pupil

(State consequence of inattentiveness rather than calling pupil ‘talkative’ or ‘noisy’)

  • Always look calm and think fast for extreme misbehaviour

(Do not look fearful or shocked when a child turns violent.

Stay calm and deal with it accordingly)

Learning culture

  • Routine of thinking of a question to ask during/after a lesson

  • Answer question regularly even if pupils are not correct

  • Do not laugh at friend’s wrong answer

  • Respect everyone’s answer

Important that pupils have the right mindset that everyone can learn. The only difference is how much and how quickly a pupil can learn. The attitude of never give up should be a routine and class culture.
