Bible stories for kids 11 - Isaac, Rebekah and their sons, Jacob and Esau!

Genesis 25:19-34

When Isaac was 40 years old, he married Rebekah.

Rebekah could not have children. After 20 years Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. God heard Isaac’s prayer and Rebekah became pregnant.

While Rebekah was pregnant, the babies inside her struggled with one another. She prayed to the Lord and said,

“What is happening to me?” The Lord said to her, “The leaders of two nations are in your body. Two nations will come from you, and they will be divided. One of them will be stronger, and the older will serve the younger.”

After nine months, Rebekah gave birth to twins. The first baby was red and he was very hairy, so he was named Esau which means hairy.

The second baby was holding onto Esau's heel and he was named Jacob.

Isaac was 60 years old when Esau and Jacob were born. As the boys grow older, Esau became a skilled hunter and he loved to be outside in the fields.

Jacob was a quiet boy who liked to stay at home. Isaac loved Esau very much because he loved his game and Rebekah loved Jacob very much as he was always there around the tents.

One day when Esau was hunting he became so hungry that he thought that he is going to die from hunger. So he decided to go home. When he got there he saw that Jacob had made very nice red bean soup.

So Esau asked Jacob to gave him some of his red soup. Jacob said to Esau that he first has to promise to give him his firstborn rights.

Esau said, what does it help me to keep my birthright if I am going to die from hunger?
Jacob insisted that Esau made an oath that will he give his birthright to him.

After he promised Jacob gave him soup and bread. Esau ate and drink something and he left.

That is how Esau gave away his firstborn rights for a cup of red soup and got to be called Edom which means Red.
