Tips: How to make comprehension easier and more fun
Let's be completely honest, not everyone likes reading and answering questions.
Comprehension work can feel like a chore or a burden, but luckily here are ways to make this process easier. If you break the process down, you will understand better and it could even make it fun.
The comprehension structure can be broken down into three parts: The text, your head and your heart.
Teach your child to write down or think of these questions when doing a comprehension, this will make them relate to the story and therefore make the comprehension process enjoyable. Also remember to always work one step at a time.
The Text
If you cannot answer these questions in full with confidence the first time round then read the story again. Pay attention to different characters and their traits. Try figure out the main idea or lessons to be learnt. If the time allows you to, retell the story to a friend and see if you pick up any specifics you didn't before. The questions below are just examples of what you can ask yourself to get the proper information needed to understand the story you are reading.
What is the text about?
Who is telling the story?
What does the author want you to know?
Your Head
Once again, if you can't answer the questions below, do the following to assist. Use prior knowledge that you have learnt from other stories. Make sure you know fact from opinion. Make connections to yourself with texts, media and the world.
What changed or confirmed your thinking?
What surprised you?
What does the author think you already know?
Your Heart
Same as above, do the following things if you cannot answer the questions below. Ask questions about the story. If there is anything you don't understand, ask as many questions as you need to. Draw a conclusion and discuss this with others.
What did you learn about yourself?
How will this change your thoughts or actions?
All of the above are tips and questions you could ask yourself to make comprehension work easier.
