How to encourage your child to read more - Part 1
Reading forms a very important part of the base education of your child's developing years.
The more they read, the better their spelling will be and their vocabulary will increase. Reading often will also stimulate your child's creative side and might bring out the inner writer in your child.
Let's look at some tools you can use for your child to become a better reader or encourage them to become an everyday reader.
Determine your child's level of reading
Often as parents you might not be sure which level of books to get in order for your child to read at home. Have a chat with the teacher at school to see what he or she recommends. Or have a look at their reading book they use at school and use your own discretion. It is important to spend a little more time on choosing the right degree of difficulty of the book you are going to start your child off at. This will set the tone to your child's reading career.
Choose a genre
Secondly, you will have to get a book in the genre that your child is showing interest in. This will change as they get older, which is only natural. So every couple of months make time to discuss this with your child in order for them not to lose interest in reading. Once your child is old enough, take them to a book store or library so they can pick out their own books.
Follow the reader
This could assist if your child is not keen on reading. Let them see you read, even if it is only 20 minutes a day. If you show interest in a certain subject then you have a bigger chance of them showing interest. Most little ones want to be like mommy or daddy. So use this as a tool to get them hooked on something that will be highly beneficial to them in the long run.
