The day on November 11th is Remembrance Day, also well-known as Armistice Day in the UK for memorizing the warriors and people died in the wars.

On this day, people of the country would wear “poppies” to represent their respect and memory to the friends or family who lost their lives during the wars. Owing to the color and shape, it also implies blood on the chest to remind people how cruel wars are and teach the young generation to cherish the peace we have nowadays.

As to the origin why people adopted poppy flower as a symbol for showing their respect to those who have fought for the country for decades, we can take the following report as a reference!

The story of why we wear poppies dates back to the First World War. In 1915, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae lost his friend in the battle of Ypres. As he was grieving the loss of comrade Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, he spotted scores of poppies growing in the battle-torn fields.

This poignant sight inspired him to write In Flanders Fields, one of the most famous war poems of all time.

Following the First World War, the poppy was then adopted as a symbol of remembrance.

In the beginning, the activity was organized in the hope of raising money for the family of the sufferings with the earnings of these badges. With the history and tradition preserved by England people, it turns to a kind of custom of this country. In fact, people wear poppies not only on November 11th but the days of November. I think it’s a way for people to comfort their pain for the lost. Even time passes by, however, some sorrow still goes on, and people who had experienced and survived from the wars are in need of some ceremony to cure, to ease such kind of pain.

In 1921, the first ever Poppy Appeal distributed nine million poppies, raising £106,000.

Contrary to popular belief, the poppy isn’t a symbol of death or support for war or a political or religious statement.

The British Legion describes the poppy as a “symbol of remembrance and hope”.

This year, Remembrance Sunday takes place on Sunday, November 12, when the Cenotaph Service takes places at Whitehall in London.

在英國訂定11月11日這天為國殤紀念日，也被稱為停戰日，這個日子紀念著無數在戰爭中死亡的人。街上各地會看到許多人在胸前佩戴著虞美人花造型的紅色徽章，一開始我並不知道這典故，後來一查才知道源起於一戰後，為了募款也為了讓人們紀念，英國製作這可配戴的徽章讓人們購買配戴，而所得就用來資助罹難者的家屬。

但在英國其實不止當天，基本上11月整個月都可在各地看到人們配戴，今年由王室舉行的祭典也在11月12日週日當天舉行，稱為Remembrance Sunday。另外對於虞美人花，一般存在死亡或支持戰爭的誤解，因此近年來也有民眾因為泛政治化的敏感問題而拒絕配戴，英國教會也為此重新賦予虞美人花為紀念與和平的象徵，希望大家擁有不同的詮釋。

由於虞美人花與與罌粟花同屬罌粟花科，因此也產生一些誤解與爭議事件，但其實兩種花是不同的，長相也有所差異，以下簡單藉由圖片稍做區分。
