Working As A Teacher

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

The job of a teacher is one of the most underrated careers in some places. Though there are still regions where the prospects are seen with distinction and respect, there are still venues where the profession is diminished.

Sometimes, this is due to certain people that tarnish the career, but I feel that it has to do with the culture regarded to each specific region. Whatever the reasons might be, most of these professionals work hard to enlighten minds.

So, I want to share some traits that I think can be considered among the most important pillars that any teacher should uphold.

Without proper order, I will detail the following:

Responsibility

All teachers must be an example to all their students. And not to follow their exact path, but to absorb their values. And one that should stand out is responsibility.

In whatever field students end up settling down, they need to be accountable for what they do and say. That's why they need to exude honor. Through teacher's behavior, students need to see an impeccable attitude that strives for justice and fairness.

In addition, teachers should let their students know that through their lives reactions will be provoked by their previous actions (I talked a bit about it in my last post: Growing Up). So, they need to think carefully before acting, specially in serious situations.

Freedom

Teachers must instill freedom in the students' minds. And I'm not referring only to the freedom of speech, but also to the freedom of creating... To embrace their creativity fully so that they can find wisdom through self learning process.

This is something that requires time to assimilate because people are accustomed to do what they are told. That's how some societies have been shaped. However, when we show children the power that resides in creativity, the human nature itself reveals, slipping all that creativity that little children have, which is sadly repressed as the child is growing.

Some teachers do an excellent job trying to (as Morpheous would say) "Free your Mind." They organize events or even do strategies in class that take students out of the ordinary lessons... That's what most should do now and then to bring some freshness and inspire creativity as well.

Innovation

Innovation comes from creativity. This is the part where the great minds manifest their potential. It's rarely seen in some schools that teachers break the mold. And it's not entirely their fault. Sometimes they want to, but their hands are kind of tied by the so called pedagogy methods or institution's rules.

And students just wind up doing the routine because it is easier and safer. But they don't move. They just get stuck, and progress just become a platonic dream.

Thus, I consider highly essential to promote innovation. That has been the only way the world's progressed. Even in this current era, where the world looks more cruel and indecent, progress is still being made in many fields. Nevertheless, the main problem is still us... our way of living that we don't willingly want to change.

Well, I don't intend anybody to see this as a complain or an impeachment. I just wanted to highlight some traits teachers, as educators, should have in order to contribute a little bit to build a better and more righteous world for all of us.

Nice post, I have been retired from teaching for two years now. I worked with special needs children for over 30 years and loved every minute of it. I taught Middle School children that were classified Emotionally Disturbed. Almost every student I taught came from a household where there was only one parent. Being a father of four children I know first hand the work that was required by both my wife and me to raise them.
These children were starting life out behind he 8 ball. Their social skills were very often diminished. This was an area that had to be concentrated on before any formal educating could ensue. On trait that I believe is most important for all teachers to possess is that of being compassionate. There was a quote that I always had hung in my class and on our Bulliten board out side of our class. " Kids don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." This quote was not displayed for the students, but rather for my collegues!!

Good quote! and it's true. Sometimes we've seen how the teacher figure is perceived as a distance presence, where students only have to strive to match the teacher's intellect. It requires much more to establish a fruitful connection.
