Learning How To Think For Ourselves
I always go by the motto that "we need to learn how to think." I remember the movie Dead Poets Societywhere the main character, a teacher called John Keating, was telling a stiff-necked and old fashion senior this:
I always thought the idea of education was to learn to think for yourself.
This principle fits into any aspect of our life. In a educational environment, this boosts creativity and encourages students to discover knowledge. The teacher zone merges with that of students', and everything becomes a compound of mutual interaction, where the teacher is no longer the almighty supreme being. He or she alongside with the students go for the same endeavors: Grow and get to know what is awaiting to be discovered.
People who have made significant contributions to the world have known the importance behind this. Each society has seen great men and women from separated regions sharing one thing common. And that thing is their longed desire that people can finally reach the capacity to successfully lead themselves, that they can know what's best for them instead of letting others decide and telling them what to do.
So let's see how we can we start thinking for ourselves:
- Welcome guidance but embrace showing
We require guidance specially from skilled and experienced people. But we need to be careful to what extend their direction goes because it can turn into rigid norms.
Consider those people that lay ahead different options for us, that don't limit us, and that don't cut progress because we might not be apt to a possible challenge... These are normally the people that push us to make our decisions.
- Internalize any information with simplicity but hunger need
Absorb but also analyze. Make comparison between the new information that comes in and the assimilated one. Find similarities and differences. Look for connections, and process conclusions. You will realize that it's a whole of exceptional experience to let our mind work out.
- Don't reject any idea or sudden thought (That can be creativity looming)
Every day we face diverse situations, some of them unexpected. And if we let others step in and decide for us, we're letting them eliminate the possible value we could provide.
Have you seen how those influential and determined people such as Elon Musk acts and behaves? In essence, he exudes creativity. He allows it to fly without interference (negativity and rejection). How would you think he'd be able to come up with great ideas if he lets others shut down his creativity?
- Allocate a little trust in your gut feelings
Sometimes we don't listen to that inner voice that kicks us. Though it is not a logical thinking, it can be our subconscious screaming at us. There are some much about our brain that we don't know yet. It's a terrain that needs deep exploring.
But it's always a good idea not to ignore a hunch. We need to consider it and then analyze using critical and logical thinking. We would be surprise to know that after reasoning, that hunch could make sense.
These are some traits that I have recognized in some inspiring personalities that have helped get world going. Through their examples they have showed us how proactive it is to make our decisions.
Thinking for ourselves also defines our character. It makes us feel the weight of our actions because they always carry consequences. Either bad or good, the implications may come to be, they shape us and make us strong. They make us feel the experience of life and urge us to deal with our mistakes.
