All teacher always deal with the motivation problem that many students present. And they regularly introduce strategies to wake up interest or to promote enthusiasm.

In high levels like university, it is not extremely necessary to motivate because the students are already adults. And most importantly, they are there to pursue a career they chose. So the motivation is present. But for primary and high school students don’t know yet what they want to do.

So, for school teachers, it is imperative to suppress everything that might cause boredom and apathy. Every time that a situation turns up a little languid during class, there is a huge risk that indifference may settle down.

Break formality

When we teach youngsters, we need to be flexible. Not a lot because we should not lose discipline and respect. But when a teacher is too formal, especially when presenting the topic of the class, students feel as if a barrier has just arisen.

One of the reasons a student socializes in school with other classmates is because he/she feels identified with a specific group. In such group, there are interests that are shared by all the members. And as long as the relationship grows, the trust settles in more.

At the end, it’s a trust game. Some teachers don’t portray this mutual confidence; and not because they don’t want to, rather because they were trained in that way. There are cases when university teachers go to work at high schoolsa and they have a hard time adjusting to this reality.

Approach topics with a realistic view

There is a hard premise among students. Most of them often don’t see value in what they are taught. And the issue is not the topics but the approach. Have you ever wondered why students get interested more in trivial things?

It’s because how it relates to the world they perceive. As I have implied in the paragraphs above, they look for similar characteristics in the other people they’re socializing with. And If they find them, they will show interest.

So, we need to craft our teaching in a way that shows its relevance to what the students do every day. Some people might say that it is hard to cover all topics with such approach. But there is always a way to do it. And if not, we really have to ask ourselves whether what we are teaching is really valuable or not.

Breakthrough

Many teachings have surprising discoveries for young minds. We just need to look back at our lives and review all those moments when our heart pumped up because we found something really amazing and useful.

This is a good way to wake up interest among the students. We have to remember that we’re teachers with much information that can be used to inspire and enlighten.

It is up to us to provoke the “awe moment” expression in class. It’s incredible the effect this causes. Even problematic students would show interest. And most importantly, the whole class will engage, boosting the progress of the teachings.
