Greetings my dear readers of steemit. Today I am going to talk about the International Recycling Day, which is celebrated on May 17 of each year. It is an initiative that emerged to promote and create awareness to reorient the behavior of all citizens of the world on the strategy of reducing, reusing and recycling waste as appropriate, in order to protect the environment.

¿ What is Recycling?

Recycling is a process that involves submitting the raw materials that make up the materials we use in everyday life such as paper and cardboard, glass, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, some plastics, textiles and fabrics, wood and electronic components, etc., already used totally or partially, to a physicochemical or mechanical process, to transform them into a new product or new materials.

Origin and Meaning of the Recycling Symbol

The symbol consists of a circle of Möbius next to three arrows which represent a process of recycling, this design was developed during a contest held in 1970 organized by the Container Corporation of America as part of the first Earth Day, where it was selected the logo drawn by Gary Andersen a student at the University of Southern California.

Gary Anderson created a logo based on the steps of the recycling process:

Reduce: consists in reducing objects from becoming waste.
Reuse: consists in reusing a product to give it the same or another use.
Recycle: consists in the treatment of waste that is reintroduced in a life cycle.

Colors of the Containers

Within the recycling process it is important to know the types of waste to make the separation of each of them:

  • Green container: in the green container are glass is collected (glasses, mirrors, tables etc).
  • Gray container: Metal waste is collected in the gray container (lids, cans, aluminum containers, etc.).
  • Blue container: the blue container contains waste of all types of cardboard such as boxes, wrapping paper, * newspapers, cardboards, etc.
  • Orange container: in the orange container all organic waste such as vegetables, food, absorbent paper, toilet paper, etc. are collected.
  • Yellow container: in the yellow container are collected the plastic waste like bottles, containers, plastic cards, bags, etc.

Currently, there is a greater production of waste in almost all the world, which has generated a high level of pollution of our planet. Reason why by recycling, less waste is generated, pollution is reduced by the industry, polluting less air by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, protecting our aquifers and preserving the natural habitat of many species, we take care of our soils because the waste goes to the corresponding place and does not accumulate in the waters of our rivers and seas, global warming is combated, since we avoid generating greater contamination, and therefore it allows us to preserve natural resources.

Importance of Recycling

The importance of doing so is that it can help us solve many of the problems created by the modern way of life. Large amounts of non-renewable natural resources can be saved when recycled materials are used in production processes. Renewable resources, such as trees, can also be saved. The use of recycled products decreases energy consumption. When less fossil fuels are consumed, less CO2 will be generated and therefore there will be less acid rain and the greenhouse effect will be reduced.

In the financial aspect, we can say that recycling can generate many jobs. A large workforce is needed to collect the materials suitable for recycling and for their classification. A good recycling process is capable ofvgenerate income.
