Role of family/Home in Education.

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school(Albert Einstein).
Education is the applied aspect of the theoritical bookish version of knowledge.Many agencies in addition to school have good roles to play in shaping the overall development of children

Home or family is the ideal and oldest form of social organisation known to man. It is inevitable informal agency with no substitute.Even the individuals who had never gone to school are exposed to this particular agency of education.

Family is the original social institution from which all other institutions developed (Bellard)

Important function of home or family

Social function:- Home is the cradle of all virtues. Social virtues like love, affection, approval, recognition, security, freedom etc are learnt in the home.The child gets his first social contacts in the home early and thase contacts form the nucleus of human social relationships.
Socialization:- Socialization is a process by which children learn the culture of society and becomes one with society and member of society. The various processes by which socialization takes place include cooperation opposition etc.

Russell says, "Home gives the child the experience of effective and of a small community in which he is important. He has also the experience of relationship with people of both the sexes and different ages, and of the multifarious business of adult life".

Affectional function:- The primary function of the family is to give affection to the children and thereby contribute to the mental and emotional development. Family incorporates the training of emotions in children.
Impact of this function is better realized by looking at the children of broken families.Almost all the cases of juvenile deliquesces are seen in children of such families.

Cultural function:- Family introduce the children to the culture of the society, thereby transmitting the cultural heritage of society io the child.it familarises the child with the language, traditions, values, taboos, and customs of the society. Culture is transmitted from generation to generation in the home.

Religious and spiritual functions:-The religion of parents is transmitted to the children in a gradual manner. Children visit the religious places, festivels and leaders with their parents, therby, imbibing these features and then transmitting down the hierarchy.

Vocationalal functions:- in traditional societies children used to adopt the vocation of their parents, for example, son of priest would become a priest etc.Even in modern societies home environment helps a child to be prepared for a profession and it provides opportunities for selection of and preparation for a profession.
Home environment exposes children to external world proportionate to exposure of parents.Better the parent exposure, better avenues will they make available to their children and therfore better will be the future of their children.

Intellectual function:- Home provides opportunities for intellectual development of the child like language learning takes place in home, development of healthy interests, facilities for reading, study habits also takes place in home.

Development of personally and character:- it's well said that the home that rocks the cradle, rules the world.Family lays the foundation of character & values like sincerity, honesty & truthfulness etc.
Depending on parental ways of handling the harsh and trying situations ( pleasing or abusive) in life, children are most likely to handle the situations in the similar manner.
To Sum up, personality is the result of home environment.

Civic and Moral function:-Family has vital role in introducing moral values to their children.
Home is rightly called the primary school of civic virtues. Child receives training in discipline and self control. He learns to obey and respect the elders.He learns the importance of mutual rights and duties.

The moral qualities are also imbibed by the child at home as in the family, the child acts as others act, he thinks) and feels as other members of family do.
If the parents are honest, truthful, hard' working, courageous and disciplined, their children will also imitate them in their day to day behaviour.

Biological function:- Procreation and giving birth to new generation is the basic function of the family. Family comes into existence because of biological needs of human beings.The blood lineage is the fundamental function of the home.

Developmental function:- Home provides favourable opportunities for proper physical development of the individual. Family has responsibility of providing the physical needs such as food and shelter to all the children.
