MY TP DIARY ----- BENEFITS OF EXERCISE TO SCHOOL CHILDREN

Thursday mornings are for sports/exercise in Ekeminini nursery/primary school. I enjoy watching them as they play about with their teachers in the premises. Normally, they exercise in groups; each group its own kind of exercise. It powerfully drives in nostalgic thoughts of my childhood days.
I loved sports days back then.

The most memorable sports days were the ones I was in my mum’s group/class. (Smiles) Yeah, mum taught me in primary (Story for another day)



So last Thursday I had fun watching the sporting pupils of Ekemini school in their various groups. I watched the tiny hands in one group engage in a tug of war. Lol! Others were singing/dancing, others playing handball, etc.


My colleague, a French teacher came to join me and I took the opportunity to inquire about the secondary school as I have never seen them in any form of exercise since landing in the school.


ME: So why doesn’t the Secondary school have a day for sports?

TEACHER: Actually, we are supposed to have it on Fridays… but I don’t like…. (kicks her limbs lazily)


Lol! That was hilarious. Lazy limbs’ things right on point!


Well I decided to look up the benefits of exercise for school children and below are what I could gather:

  • Exercise, as we know, is critical for a happy and healthy living.
  • It reduces the rate of obesity in kids
  • It boosts brain power in children.
  • And subsequently, improvement in their academic performance
  • It helps develop physical skills in children which might later bloom into passionate activities or career such as athletics later in life
  • It improves a child’s behavior within the classroom and beyond.
  • It indirectly teaches values and also teaches a child to moderate his/her behavior.
  • It improves a children's relationships with one another and with teachers, and other people within and beyond the school
  • It makes the kids more active; hence they are more likely to grow into active adults.
  • It improves emotional responses in kids and decreases anxiety and depression.
  • It improves self-efficacy, self-image, and self esteem in children.
  • It is rucial for physical and mental health.
  • Further more, study in children's health shows that frequent exercise is important for the improvement of many chronic sicknesses in children.



From the above it is obvious that exercise/sports plays vital roles in different facets of a child’s life.

I highly recommend parents and teachers make their wards partake in as much frequent exercise as possible to optimize their health as well as their social and academic lives.
