Never Stop Learning - Politeness Week Day 2
Hi Steemit!
Time for another dosage of politeness. Remember to drink down with plenty of water :)
Ok so yesterday I told you about the Would you mind....? construction (DAY 1). I also told you there is another variation to it. Look below!
So, yesterday it was all about asking SOMEBODY to do something for you. Hence, somebody else performs the action (opening the window etc)
Today it's about YOU asking permission to do something. In other words, you want to perform the action.
Would YOU mind if I smoked? = Would it be a problem for you If I smoked
Notice! Two versions! With Do and would. Look at the grammar that follows! V2 = second form of the verb -> past simple,
V1 = first form of the verb - the infinitive
ONE MORE THING! How do you respond to these questions?
Well if the actual question is:
Would YOU mind if I smoked? = Would it be a problem for you If I smoked?
If it is a problem you would say:
Yes, I would mind = yes, it would be a problem
Or
No, I wouldn't mind - No, it wouldn't be a problem
Be careful though! if we accidentally respond yes when in fact we mean no than it can lead to confusion.
The easiest way? If it's not an issue say:
Not at all
Some sentences:
Would you mind if I smoked?
Not at all, please do
Do you mind if I join you?
Not at all, be my guest!
That's day 2! Repost if you think other people need this, follow me for more Never Stop Learning posts (@cwbrooch) and upvote too :)
See you tomorrow!!!
Great explanation! English is not my mother tongue so it is very useful to see posts like this and learn new phrases :)
