I would love to see this one day... It was a good question you posed; what would you think if...?
Because of course for many people, the first thing they would jump to is aliens. It seems so many of us want to fill our gaps in knowledge with aliens, magic, or whatever; when the truth is there's often a completely logical (if yet unknown) explanation.
For a bonus of 10, what's the difference between refraction and rarefaction?
Me too... In Greece we don't get to see such phenomena (thankfully for me, our climate is warmer)
And I'll be honest, I didn't know the term rarefaction, but I googled it :P
It seems to be the weakening in density following a wave of increase in pressure

Lolz, that was me being lazy, I just remembered the word rarefaction from my old physics classes. I thought it had something to do with light passing through water but I couldn't remember exactly :-)
