Quick & Fun Experiments: Plastic Milk

Today's experiment will be plastic milk! Just like the previous experiments, this one is also very easy and quick so if you're interested to know more keep scrolling down!

What you'll need:

  • 1 Cup of milk
  • 4 tablespoons of vinegar
  • A few drops of food colouring of your choice (optional)
  • Stove top
  • Strainer
  • Bowl

What to do:

  1. Heat up the stove and put it on low heat.
  2. Pour one cup of milk into the pot.
  3. Pour four tablespoons of vinegar into the milk.
  4. Stir the mixture together and make sure that it doesn't boil.
  5. Once the mixture is heated(not boiled) remove it from the stove and strain it.
  6. Next all you need to do is knead the clumps up into a ball and put it into a bowl.

Tip:

If you don't have vinegar, you can use orange, lemon, or even tomato juice because they are acidic too.

Why does this happen?:

Milk has a protein in it called casein, so when the milk and the vinegar which is acidic combine, they create long chains called polymer and become plastic. It would actually be better for the environment if plastic was made this way.
