Pink Amazon River Dolphin
As an animal lover, I love searching the internet for animals that I may not have heard of and just learn about them. I recently came across an animal that I think is so adorable and that animal is the pink Amazon river dolphin! We are going to learn more about them today!
Where can you find them?
The pink amazon river dolphins can be found in freshwaters such as rivers and lakes in the Amazon, Madeira River and the basins of the Orinoco.
You can either call it the pink Amazon river dolphin, Amazon river dolphin or boto but the scientific name for it is the Inia geoffrensis.
What do they eat?
The Amazon river dolphin’s diet consists of different types of small fish, turtles, crabs, shellfish, catfish and crustaceans.
Mating & Gestation:
The males are quite romantic, they propose to the females for mating by carrying branches in their mouths and giving it to them. During the mating season, the male dolphins will also fight each other for the females which then results in them injuring themselves. All in all, this behavior is quite normal considering that other animals do this too.
Once the female dolphin is pregnant, the gestation period is between 9-12 months and their calves weigh just over 1kg and are 75cm long. The calves are actually born grey and as they get older they’ll slowly become more pink. They have a lifespan of 30years and when they’re fully grown they weigh between 160-181kgs and are between 2-3 meters long. The males are actually more pink than the female dolphins.
They are also equipped with a very large brain and are able to move their head up to 180 degrees. These dolphins are actually the most intelligent compared to the other 4 species of river dolphins. Although they have small eyes, they have amazing eyesight and have long rostrums to be able to capture prey. To communicate with one another, they use whistling tones.
What makes them so special?
Besides their gorgeous pink colour, the Amazon dolphins are nowhere near being violent animals, except of course when they fight for a mate. They are usually very friendly and are known for approaching humans and being gentle with them. These creatures are so adorable that when they become excited they become a bit more pink just like humans do when they blush!
