This site offers an interesting web-based lesson centered around the Chinese Zodiac, and also several extension lesson plans for all ages to learn more about culture.
And this one from NEA has a collection of lessons and resources for the winter holidays Click skip to content on the top left and browse the many, many links. Compare and contrast how students celebrated over the winter break with some of the traditions and holidays included in these sources - you know, a little up-leveled “what I did for winter break” essay.
For celebrating the New Year, have learners explore this article on
The Farmer’s Almanac - New Year’s Traditions from Around the World. Learners can create a new tradition for each of the categories of celebration listed, create their own personal or classroom resolutions, or create an argument for or against making resolutions at all!
Learners can map the regions mentioned in this article on
CNN Travel - 10 New Year’s Food Traditions Around the World. Older learners could research the origins of each dish, or find a recipe and recreate one together. As an extension, learners can choose a dish that represents their city/state/country and explain why it is a meaningful representation.
